depends on how you read it, if he was taking it out at four months of age lamping just to show it the ropes and get it used to the enviroment and land while working another dog then i don't see a problem, i think the mutt would be too immature to do much else and would probably be a hindrance, it stated that by 12 months it was taking 20 a night :hmm: , maybe a bit of artistic license on his behalf...be interesting to see what replies come back in on this one in next weeks issue....

He says he never has his dog on a lead while lampin does that mean he didnt have it on a lead at 4 months imo thats the problem .

A 12 month old dog is more than capable of taking 20 rabbits if its the right breeding ,type right time of the year and on the right ground no problem

i agree to disagree, i don't see a problem with a dog being off the lead at four months if it's ok with stock and obedient, answers to recal which i take it is and that in my opinion was also what he was getting at by starting them early lamping, i don't think he meant using it for lamping but getting it out in the field while he was lamping, but hey i might be wrong, a lot of people have their dogs off in the field from four months during daylight hours, i can only hazard a guess that he meant he was getting the mutt accustomed to the surroundings it would be working in the hours of darkness, smells, hazards and lay of the land, although most of it would probably go out the window if a chase is on, but everyone to there own .....

He says " I start my dogs young as this is the only way to build up real stamina in a dog " that s nonsence .

Im a great believer in letting pups out at a very early age its great for there confindence to get out amongst it but they a re given very little in the way of a chase like every one agrees with keep them winning but running a pup .

But running a pup does nothing for stamina it will just give them problems in later life especaily bigger lurchers .

I would expect most pups to be doing a bit by 8-9 months and above but 4 months they should not be running at quarry

im not trying to be clever , but who in there right mind would work a puppy at 4 months old, only some imbicile, for christ sake they are still growing , yes a bithch will mature quicker than dogs , but there growth plates are still open for more growth, the muscles aren't fully matured, and they are certainly not mentally ready, it's a sure fire way to see a pup find an early death , because it most certainly would suffer some sort of irreversible damage to either bone or muscle development, this guy must be a complete plonker , just remember it's better to learn to walk before you can run,

I take it all your dogs are locked in a kennel or walked on the lead till they are a year old then :hmm::hmm: Because any dog with any go in it at all will hunt from an early age and those pups that show potential at an early generaly become my favourites.I obviously wouldnt expect to much if anything from a pup but a dog that is acustomed to the rough and tumbles sights and smells of the countryside will be a better prospect than one thats been pissing up lamposts and walked on concrete.Use your common sense.JMHO

HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU MINE OUT AND ABOUT SOON AS THEY'RE JABBED AND OVER LAST 20 YRS NEVER HAD A PROPLEM GET THEM OUT AND SHOW THEM WHAT LIFE'S ABOUT AS YOU SAY COMMON SENSE IS WHAT ITS ABOUT BE IT 12 WEEKS OR 12 YRS

I think everyone agrees its good for a pup to be outdoors getting used to various smells etc but we are talking about letting a still developing animal work at 16 weeks.

It's like putting a complete novice in the ring with Calzagie, yes the novice will get the odd punch in but the outcome is ineviatable. He's not ready to fight a champ and would more than likeley get a complelte hammering. Now give that novice fitness training, show him the ropes, how to box and he's got a better chance of holding his own as he wouldn't fight him until he had advanced to that level.

Like I said, each to their own but I really hope people dont follow his example.

Picked up my copy of Countrymans this week and glanced at the letters to the editor section. Couldn't believe the letter published by someone called Tony Webb.

He is saying pups should be taken lamping at 4 months old!! What a lot of nonsence!! 4 months is only 16 weeks - still bloody puppies!

I actually cant believe they would publish that to be honest.

Is it just me or is there something wrong with that?

was that the bloke that said his dogs done 20 rabbits a night.?

why do you say that do you think it is not possible to do twenty in a night ???????
