What to look for?

Recommended Posts

I have a collie and a kelpie. Two bitches, 3 and 4 years old. Cracking little dogs, high pray drive and great at ratting and driving out rabbits. Looking at getting a running dog to join the pack but no idea what to go for. I have seen a few patterdale x whippets work and beddyx whippets but not sure if a bigger dog would be better suited. Any advice/ recommendations would be great. Thank you

It’s like asking how long is a piece of string !

Youll get loads of different opinions, and that’s all they are ; opinions.

For what it’s worth, here is my opinion;

If ratting and bushing for rabbits is your game, you’ll need something relatively small and fast.
A whippet, a whippet greyhound, a beddy greyhound.

Any of them should do the job for you .

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Cheers.

Thank you. I mainly be running rats and rabbits so whippet x it will be. Probably look towards pat/collie x whippet or beddy/collie x whippet, comething along those lines.

It does really depend on what you want to catch, where it is, and how you want to catch it? Collies and terriers will catch almost everything. If you want it done more quickly get a whippet or a greyhound.

Spot on, a nice beddyx grey be just what you need.if it a beddyx whippet prob hit 21in  if beddyx  whippetx grey prob 23in, but for me I go for for a 1x beddyx grey, make  say 23'24in, so not over big,  get on to  bushing rabbits no prob, and if you knock the odd fox out of cover  they do that as well.the only prob, is getting a straight  1x, as most people  go for the whippet x grey, but you never know you good drop lucky and find one.!

Pure whippet.  You know it makes sense.

That's if you intend on keeping on hunting rabbits and rats.

No need for a bigger dog.
