State pension UK

Recommended Posts

Once upon a time the workhouses were full of the old and the poor

Progress was achieved when OAPs were given a few bob  to stop them clogging up the workhouses or dropping  dead in the street and making a nuisance of themselves.

Things gradually improved until the lovely Mrs Thatcher decided the link between earnings and pensions should be broken and the state pension should be uprated every year by a measure of inflation: RPI ( the retail price index). This meant the state pension has declined in value markedly over the years.

Roll on a few years and the generous tories declared RPI was too expensive a measure and should be changed to CPI ( the consumer price index). Guess what ? CPI is generally lower than RPI by one percent. So for every year since that change ( about ten years or so) we have lost one per cent.

Along comes weasels  Clegg and Cameron who introduced the triple lock. Pensions would now be uprated by the greater of 2.5 per cent, CPI or the increase in earnings.

Until  the generous Mr Sunak came along and declared he was going to double cross pensioners in a year when wages surged because the cost would be too expensive. So the triple lock is not worth the paper it is written on.

Finally along comes a Labour Chancellor whose first move was to confiscate pensioners  winter heating allowance.

Which is why, barring Portugal ,we have the lowest pensions in Europe.

All the above affect not only present day pensioners but future pensioners. Don't expect the state pension to be anywhere near enough to live on lads.

Start saving now.

See, it’s stuff like that, that is disgusting. You could feel better about these things if you looked out your window and seen your town and your country getting much better, but you don’t mate,

Imho, it’s not good waiting for the government (Tory or Labour) to be fair to you…..it’s never going to happen, ever ! These people are money junkies and they will keep dreaming up new things to

No just enough to live on and keep them self warm in the winter. The deal was you pay in and you get a pension when you reach 65 men and 60 for women. They have moved the goalposts on that now.

In a word, betrayed mate !

My advice would be not to save (they will only find a way to nick it), my advice would be to take your ball, tell them you aren’t playing anymore and check out…….if you are of an age, find a nice cheap place in a nice country and leave them to all see where this great plan leaves them without the people that built and payed for it all

f**k em !

hey up. im bordering on pauperism i am, lol,   and ive read, if your pension and any other benefits you get, reaches a certain amount , ya gonna be taxed eh, i can only foresee one way out, but a certain gentleman off here, once told me, the blue washing line from poundland would snap under my weight

And Labour are looking at scrapping the “seven year rule”, whereby you can give your house and everything else to your children or grandchildren and they’ll not pay tax on it if you live more than seven years after you gift it to them.

Also , they are thinking of putting capital gains tax on your house when you sell it even if it’s your only property.

My parents bought their council house with the intention of it being sold when they died and the proceeds being split between their children , my dad died and then my mum went into a care home and her meagre savings and her house were taken to pay for her care even though Boris stood up in Parliament and said it wouldn’t happen.

My wife and I made wills leaving everything to our grandson, I hope there’s something left for him when the government take their pound of flesh……

Cheers.

We must have a system where you can leave your house at least to your family.

I cannot believe parliament is so cynical,  incompetent and dysfunctional that they cannot implement a decent social care system. The old and sick are clogging up NHS beds and when they are discharged  often boomerang back into hospital because they cannot care for themselves at home.

A national disgrace to add to the long list of the UK's list of shame.

I know 3 people of my age who have had to pay for replacement hips or knees. Waiting in severe pain for years was not an option they were prepared to take. 16 grand for a hip (×2)   for one friend and 11 grand for a new knee for two other friends.  They are not wealthy people and are raiding  their life savings. Most of my generation are reluctant to spend their savings on cruises etc because they know the state won't look after them when shit hits the fan.

Imho, it’s not good waiting for the government (Tory or Labour) to be fair to you…..it’s never going to happen, ever !

These people are money junkies and they will keep dreaming up new things to piss it away on none of which involve doing right by the people that paid in all their life…..in fact it will be everyone but you !

If that's not clear by now then you haven’t been paying attention !!

Take everything you can, while you can and leave them c**ts behind !
If you are older and about to go in a home, get your place in care sorted then take your savings, book into the best hotel you can and stay there eating the best food and having the best time until everyone penny of your savings is gone !
That’s what I told my wife’s granny to do, but she didn’t and the care home swallowed up her life savings and then she was dead !

f**k these people !

I will pay more attention in future I promise.

Not at all mate, I’m pretty relaxed about this stuff believe it or not….I took my own advice and checked out.

In no other walk of life would you pay fortunes to be told f**k you every day…..you wouldn’t go in a restaurant, pay them £300 and in return the chef spits on your empty plate and then hands it back to you so you can eat it…..and you go back every day for your dinner !

But that’s the logic we debate every day in conversations like this mate, but there is no logic…..they are spitting on your plate every day and we all discuss the flavour and the amount ! Lol

f**k that, I’ll just leave the restaurant and never go back thanks very much ! Lol

Another thing that pisses me off is people like that incompetent individual Lizz Truss will get a pension over 100k per annum for the brief time she was PM not forgetting this money is paid out of the public purse. Another thing that pisses me off is like my wife who has worked in the care sector for over 35 year's paying a full stamp and now with her health conditions but still carries on working the odds of her living well into state pension age are stacked against her and if the inevitable happens i wont get a percentage of her state pension. She also receives a pension from the council for 21 year's caring for the physically disabled and if she dropped dead tomorrow i would not get a penny of it unlike my miners pension she would receive a monthly percentage of it.

worked most of my life fer my pension, just give me whats rightfully mine, i will get by, thats what i do

That's the British way . Put up with everything and get on with it. The French get out and protest and keep protesting. They spend 30% of GDP on their people ...health care, social care, pensions etc. We spend 20 %. Germany Spain, Italy Finland and others spend much more than we do.

If Thatcher had not fiddled the books and tied state pensions to RPI, which was later cut again to CPI, pensions would be worth double than they are now. Just as important,  in work benefits would also be double which would go a long way to tackle in work poverty and child poverty.

The thing about us brits is that we do the government's work for them. People will say "oh we couldn't afford to double the state pension, or fix the social care system once and for all".  But we could if we copied other countries. Its normal to be treated decently elsewhere in the developed world.

Successive governments rely on us 'making do and mend'and putting up with shit.

And I promised I would give up on political tub thumping and pissing everybody off. Sorry. I can't help it. Power to the people!

Afterthought. I write to politicians all the time. Its a hobby in retirement. When the tories changed annual rises from RPI to CPI, I emailed lots of politicians pointing out the betrayal. We worked all our lives expecting RPI,  not cheaper CPI. Rachel Reeves, then then the shadow chancellor wrote back to me and agreed it was a disgrace and Labour would immediately revert back to RPI. I've emailed her and reminded her of her pledge. No reply yet. Go figure.
