From a pet home

Bought this patterdale from a pet home back last year as a 3 year old. Wasn’t expecting much but when on a walk he self entered and stayed where he needed to be until we broke through. Just goes to show when it’s in them there’s no stopping it.

A dog doesn't know it's just a pet, nor does it care, it only knows that it is a dog but not what breed, nor does it care. After many years of selective breeding, certain traits and behaviour show time and again, but it's not 100% all the time, so it's always a great result when you can share time in the field with your "pet"and it earns its keep.Gota be happy with that.

I agree toolebox, the dog doesn’t know he’s been a pet. Just that I’m a believer in well bred stuff. But took a chance on him and it paid off so happy days

Thing is the dog could be bred from generations of good working terriers, being in a pet home for 3 years isnt going to hurt the dog if he's bred right

As I am as well, I've taken on stuff from pet homes, and it's resulted in the odd excellent all-rounder, but the strike rate is over all poor results given all the time you can invest in a younger dog before it has field time. These days, I rather I bred my own from worker to worker knowing the strengths and any weak points that require to be managed, so I can get a dog that's half suitable.

A well bred dog that's been kept as a pet for a couple of years probably stands a better chance of making a decent dog than a well bred dog owned by one of the many so called terriermen that leave them banged up in a kennel 24/7 for the first 12 to 18 months of their life learning nothing.

I've gifted a few to pet homes over the yrs....more than one or two was sent back when they got too much to handle lol... everyone bar the one bitch dropped in and was dug too ,when taken and allowed to have a sniff in their own time of places that was holding...I like to have a pup of any sort,out and about after their last jabs... won't learn anything stuck in a kennel, only let out to become a ' box dog' and written off  not soon after..

Yep seen many a youngster at an age when they should be busting to go pulled out of a box covered in their own s**t and puke.To then crawl about on their belly's Staring nervously at the sky whilst there owners point them at holes telling them to get in.To then be put down coz they were useless cowards a while later.You can't beat a pup being reared in a semi pet home or with a keen youngster that hasn't been corrupted by some of the complete divs that attached themselves to the sport.

I remember a bloke years ago telling me to stand by a gate because his dogs were " hole dogs " absolutely no control over them whatsoever

Yep or the other one is the dogs that fly into every earth and spend ages going round and round or lay just out of arms reach like a skulky ferret because the know as soon as they get caught they're back on 24hr bang up

This dog I have posted that came from the pet home will not entertain anything empty. Very pleased with him so far his only fault is he’s a b*****d with other dogs

None of mine would but they got freedom right from day one.Maybe he might settle with other dogs if he starts getting plenty of work

That's a fault I could put up with...so long as the dogs staying until you get down to them
