gnasher16 30,024
400 is a killer of an event as a schoolkid i came second in England back when the Nationals were held in Derby my time of 56.2 beat the old record so only the kid who beat me that day had run faster for our age at that time.....i was never quick enough for the 100/200 and didnt have the frame or endurance for 1500 but the 400 was just about guts and brute force you had to " relaxed sprint " from gun to line...... Lee Evans was before my time but Michael Johnson,Butch Reynolds etc....even our own Roger Black were all phenomenal athletes Johnson was just a freak of nature.....real tester of an event though and one ive always kept an eye on.

It was Butch Reynolds who broke Lee Evans world record, almost 20 years later, and not by all that much. Cheers.
gnasher16 30,024
Just watching this triple jump competition makes you realise just how unbelievable Jonathan Edwards jumps were years ago these medalists are getting nowhere near it his record must be 30 years old now, cant see that ever being beaten.

Right ok....the yank Quincy Hall i think will be the first to go under 43 seconds over the next few years but your pals record im sure was 43.8 something..... so just shows how difficult the event is when in 55 odd years the record has come down less than a second !
NEWKID 27,047
Could hold my own as a youngster at longer distance and cross country, was shite at sprinting, 400m.was a killer...my mate was a good sprinter, ran national level, was a great footballer as a kid when his speed was too much for anyone, once ge got into the adult game and half decent standard the fact he couldn't control.a ball or even kick it properly caught up with him..lol
Pewit 970
Them cross countries were a killer, burning lungs in the winter, something else.

Lol It was brilliant pal, one race i got stood on and the spike opened my foot up like a tin of tuna. I ended up having to take antibiotics because the infection started running up through my veins. I used to love it mate, I'd let them live with me until the last 400yds or so and kick on. My brother is 18 months younger and he used to run in my group for the one season until I moved up, he used to crack me up laughing cos he was intent on beating me. gnasher16 30,024
Cross country wasnt really a thing for us as kids as we didnt have any countryside but we used to do what they still call the block runs which were basically road running around certain streets that ran parallel to the school apparently i still hold one of the records to this day, only worked out to about 800 meters but seemed miles as kids.....as a young boxer pounding the streets years ago we often did the hill sprints at Beckton ski slope...he was 5 or 6 years older than me some of you boxing chaps might of heard of him Terry Marsh,he had without doubt the most unbelievable engine ive ever seen on a human being ,he wasnt the quickest but for sheer lung power ive never seen anything like it he would always be last man standing up and down that ski slope....again had we not lived in the area we did im convinced he could of been a fantastic cross country runner.
