jukel123 8,009
Yes people put their animals asleep on the advice of the government at the start of WW2 in 1939. Hundreds of thousands euthanized. People feared they wouldn't be able feed their pets during warfare and that the sound of bombing would traumatise them. Would people be so compliant today? No. The role of pets, particularly dogs, has changed since 1939. Their status within a household is immense compared to the past. I heard a comedy line recently, it was something like ' he's allowed in here, he's an assistance dog, he's an an emotional support dog'. Pretty accurate. Hindus respect cows, we hero worship dogs. Must look very strange to a curious alien who might be out there.

tatsblisters 9,651
I can never recall my grandparents talking about having pets during the war only of a mongrel my great grandfather had who was a poacher and kept them in rabbits and other game meat during rationing. I would have thought certain breeds of dog's would have been rounded up for the war effort. I remember the old man who did his national service in the Royal Veterinary Core and saying most of the dogs came from the public who wanted to rehome certain dogs the German Shepherd or Alsation being the most popular.
