Francie, 2,150
I had a cracking wee red belfast brick fireplace with a 16 inch fireback,it burned well,no problems. I decided I wanted a bigger fire like the old irish ones in the stone houses,so I knocked the fireplace down leaving me with a big square gap, width 3 1/2ft an height nearly 4 ft,I was going to mortar up the inside square an put a big fire grate in. My problem now is that the smoke is coming into the room instead of going up the flue, the flue is cleaned, spotless,an I'm seriously cracking up here. I'm thinking the space is too big now an wont draw properly an I'm going to have to narrow it back to what it was,any ideas to keep the big fire opening instead of putting it back to the original size? Arry 21,412
Woodburner/ Mutifuel burner mate they are brilliant mate no wasted heat no smoke. As well you can f**k off down the pub without a worry about the open fire and sparks. I would never go back from Woodburner to open fire. Could always get a big bugger in that space and would look nice. Cheers Arry

DIDO.1 22,611
I don't think the cowl would help....it sounds like it's not drawing rather than downdrafts. Like others.... I'd vote for a decent log burner

Greyman 28,130
I have a 12kilowatt wood burner in my house that takes 2ft logs but if you want to keep the open fire just cut some ply wider than the opening and bring the head down a few inches at a time until it starts drawing properly the opening is to high I suspect causing the smoke to roll in the opening before catching the updraft
