You would be hard pressed to find a staghound over here that is just deerhound/greyhound these days. With pig hunting the big thing over here other breeds such as bull and cattle dog, Dane and mastiff have been added to most staghound lines. If I was looking for the old type I'd go to the wheatbelt in SA where they are still mostly used on fast game. There have been guys crossing the deerhound and grey trying to reproduce the original but you can't replicate that 200 or more years of breeding worker to worker. That's how types developed and still are being developed to this day for function. I think we get lost at times with a modern development called the Kennel Club were a finite number of animals where judged to be worthy of registration as proper examples of the breed, the gene then pool closed, and forever after bred within the closed gene pool to a breed standard of physical type. Always doomed to failure. 3 Quote Link to post

I agree but they are adding other breeds to improve the staghound for pig hunting, slowing it down and making it a bit tougher for the job and losing the speed, temperament and off duty, soft nature the staghound is known for. They should never recognize the staghound as a pure bred, just keep them all hound and keep working them. Quote Link to post
Aussie Whip 4,092
The Oz staghounds to me have a sort of feral wildness to them but they are very gentle dogs, much more than most hounds, except the deerhound. They are the Aussie bush dog and can catch anything from rabbits to pigs and have heard of them working cattle and scrub bulls. It would be a shame if they lost the essence of what they are. 1 Quote Link to post

I know slacky sold him a dog called Saxon which wouldn’t pick up and had loads thrown at him.Dave made it out to be one of the best he had so that would put me off talking to him.And this dog could run and looked the part but couldn’t do it. 1 Quote Link to post
