Scottish deerhound or English deerhound

Be great to import some straws/staghounds  from Oz and America and introduce some genuine working blood into the  deer/ greys we have over here.

I had the whippets with staghound in them and they had great bush sense, good feet and prey drive. You would be hard pressed to find a staghound over here that is just deerhound/greyhound these days. With pig hunting the big thing over here other breeds such as bull and cattle dog, Dane and mastiff have been added to most staghound lines. If I was looking for the old type I'd go to the wheatbelt in SA where they are still mostly used on fast game. There have been guys crossing the deerhound and grey trying to reproduce the original but you can't replicate that 200 or more years of breeding worker to worker.

I’ve often thought about importing dogs, ( I’ve actually imported three; two from Australia and one from Saudi, but they weren’t working dogs). So why import , well it would be more from the hear

My first x, 12 months old. Not best picture, stands at 30tts.

Non-ped whippet; Back in the 60’s. Cheers.

Who says? Platt? What's hes selling? Pups!

Any lurcher with half greyhound in it will chase and some will be crackers. But he's not breeding proven dog to proven dog.

So why import , well it would be more from the heart than the head, there’s nothing in this country that can’t be caught with our own types and breeds.

Years ago, imported Salukis added to the coursing dog, but would they add anything now ? I doubt it.

Staghounds from Australia ? I’ve seen them work and as impressive as they are, they are for the ground and quarry down there, probably not for here. They may add something, but I’m not sure what !

Staghounds from America ? Well, I’d have loved a pup or young dog from Dan Edwards Coyote Hounds, impressive dogs that do their jobs, but we don’t have coyotes here, and most decent lurchers will take a fox, so it would just have been a vanity project for me and I probably wouldn’t have been able to do the dog justice.

So, in conclusion, I’d say forget importing, just do your homework and only breed from dogs that are tried and tested at the job you intend using them for.

Just my opinion , of course.

Cheers.

I am opposed to mass immigration. Especially Yorkshire men escaping from their borders. I have already contacted the British genetic purity Council and suggested a wall be built around Yorkshire. We should make Yorkshire pay for it. Contamination of  non Yorkshire genes and the resultant dumbing down of mutant children needs to be halted in its tracks.

Or we could forcibly castrate white rose men. I have already volunteered for that job.

No we haven't 😂😂😂😂

Historically speaking we crossed the greyhound and deerhound pretty much as soon as we planted the union jack in botany Bay

We needed greyhound fast and deerhound strong to bring down our primary meat source (at the time  the kangaroo*now super illegal 🙄*)

Point being we did it, we loved it, we branded it "staghound"

Why on earth would I want some idiot from YouTubes bloodline when 10 minutes up the road I can grab a pup from bloodlines that do the work I want it to do 6 nights a week

Back onto the topic though, how is it going in britan keeping your working lines going particularly those older breeds the deerhound and the wolfhound ?because I know in Aus there's almost a 5 to 1 house pet to hunting line ratio trying to find a good pup these days I say that as someone who's just spent weeks looking for a pup who's breeder could show me any proof at all the parents had ever left the yard, I lucked out ended up with what should be a cracker pup and a new  permission on good ground within an hour of each other

That’s 💯 true and the ones I know with the Deerhoundxgreyhounds are doing exactly that.
