Billy b 762 Posted August 18 Report Share Posted August 18 Weight training can be great for people as they age, when people think resistance training they immediately think bodybuilding and roids, but weight training for people who are aging can mean keeping grip strength as good as possible, strength in the legs for keeping mobile and able as possible, with muscle particularly as you get older if you don't use it you'll lose it. Talking of bodybuilding I always thought lee haney talked a lot of sense, lee had lots of dealings with evander holyfield aswell 'You can fool those muscles but you can't fool those joints' was haneys words when talking about making a light weight feel heavy, that if you can make x or y amount of weight feel like a million pounds then you'll be better longevity wise I think it should be general common sense that If you don't look after yourself and if you lift things you clearly cannot lift properly, then you are gonna Injure yourself, and if you don't rest and eat properly. Good post and Holyfield working with Haney is another alarm bell signalling his clear PED abuse. No doubt about it he was a machine of a man but the amount of lean muscle he put on was incredible. Regarding tendon strength and working with light weights, I read a fascinating article which made sense, it was a workout plan that emphasised partial reps and other techniques, once you mastered them all you then added weight. Yeah the amount and the time frame he did it in aswell, definitely a machine though ad you say. Sounds an interesting article mate and certainly one I would agree with. Also partial reps and things in general are fantastic for building muscle, I find full ROM is better for say explosive power and for sports, but for aesthetics partial reps can be great, especially if you are long limbed, your bodies mechanics and someone else's may be completely different, how you perform the rep may give the next man discomfort and vice versa. Also with each muscle you do need a good stretch and squeeze but take the chest for example, hold your hand on it and move your arms about you can feel the angles that it's working In, alot of the times with full rom you can take the tension completely out of the chest and pass it onto the next muscle group, again for powerlifting and sports this is great but if you are simply trying to build a chest you don't need to always do full rom. That does sound a good article, and progressive overload can be took to silly extremes too soon with some people, small weight increments are the way forward ,not big leaps, controlling the weight on the negative movement is so important imo and this can't be done with silly jumps. Only recently a fella in the gym I'm at has done a total number on his rotator cuff and that's a serious issue cos if you don't nip that in the bud rehab wise it will more than likely become a recurring injury. People don't seem to warm up either these days before a big bench or squat, madness. Also physical strain can mean anything, not just weights, cardio too, there's a fine line between getting the best out of yourself and having something left on the table, and just totally destroying yourself and running yourself down. It's like an athlete has to peak at the right time, and you can't maintain peak fitness for too long else you'll be run down, so it's not just weights that can negatively affect you, too much heavy cardio can aswell, you want to be fit and strong but not zapped of energy 2 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

To right is that my son, lifting things properly, I did a job fer a neighbour last week, I had to shift an elec cooker to get at the job I was doing, bloody thing weighed a tonne , I'm marks on my legs summat wrotten, i just won't accept im years of age, my brain jusy wont accept it, as fer diet, i can eat a spud more than a pig, i turn my nose up at nowt, mostly junk foods Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Push pull legs is a good one, however I find with that routine it can also leave a lot of lifts suffering, I ran PPL for a while but have recently gone back to a split and am loving it, the reason I stopped with PPL was because on push day for example it's a lot on the shoulders, for example bench and overhead press in the same session, one is going to suffer depending on which one you do first, even if you use cables or dumbbells I think the biggest benefit of PPL was time, you can get done in 3days gym wise and then focus on cardio etc, but I felt after a while alot of lifts were suffering due to pre exhaustion If i were I'd either do a split or compound lifts without it being PPL if you get me, and cardio in between if you want to do some, get on the rower and things on days when you don't do weights, but personally I never do both in the same session, either cardio in the morning or weights in the evening, or cardio on a separate day to weights entirely, some lifts like clean and press get you fit aswell as strong, but in general cardio and weights for me should be done seperate unless you want to go down the hyrox or crossfit route 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
