There’s still genuine working Bedlington’s around.   Cheers.

My little bitch Delta was only 1/4 beddy, a hard little dog, only injuries in a long career were mainly cuts and tears.  lived ‘till she was 15 worked ‘till she was 12. Cheers.

A pal has just had this ten month old first cross beddy/grey sent over from Ireland, sire is working Bedlington. Cheers.

I don’t know mate. The lad that owns them says they are Bedlington and that’s good enough for me.

Cheers.

The 2 bloodied ones look like pure Bedlingtons, as we know Lakie blood improves coat texture and colour. The terrier in the top picture looks it has outcross blood, but obviously it is wrong to make assumptions from a photograph as the camera often lies 🙂  More power to the man who's grafting them though.

The photograph is of my great uncle George Johnson. Apparently he made a bit of coin exporting them to the USA, so I'm related to a dog peddler!

When people say there’s no “proper working bedlingtons” do they mean earth dogs? If so what’s the requirement that the sire would need to be an earth dog to produce ratting/rabbiting dogs? Surely there’s plenty of bedlingtons doing just that, and as charts says what does it matter if there’s a % of something else in them

A couple of salient points there, mate.

Know a few lads with bedlingtons, and bedlington lurchers, which are all worked, but I've yet to read anything at all which says bedlington terriers are/were anything other than alround working dogs, above and below ground.

So I don't get the 'it must be an earth dog to be a real beddy'.

I think it depends what you want out of the cross, someone wanting an out and out rabbiting dog might be happy with a different type of beddy to someone who wanted a dog for maybe fox work

I get what you're saying Bb, but what I'm saying is NOWHERE can I find the bedlington being said as an out and out earth dog.

Everything I've read, as well as speaking to the guys that own bedlingtons, say they are 'alrounders' above and below ground, not just earth dogs.

But theres nothing stopping any breed of terrier working above and below ground, we just choose not to use them as much

Exactly that mate, a lad I used to knock around with in my early teens had a first cross beddy grey he was only 22.5 at the shoulder, and to this day probably one the best little allrounders I’ve seen, looked a bit like some of the heartbreak fell dogs I’ve seen posted on here

Weren't they always used as a general purpose vermin dog rather than a dedicated earth dog? Mainly rabbiting from a couple of old 1800's dog books I have.
