greg64 2,818
Certainly! The regulations for keeping exotic animals can vary depending on the local authority and the specific type of animal. Here are some key points to consider: Licences and Conservation: To keep a wild animal in captivity, you may need a licence. These licences are mostly related to conservation rather than animal welfare. Many licences are linked to further legislation or international conventions. The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and Natural Resources Wales issue most licences in England and Wales. If you’re unsure whether you need a licence, it’s best to check with the relevant authority1. Specific Acts and Regulations: CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species): Controls international trade in endangered species. For certain CITES-listed species used for commercial purposes (e.g., buying, selling, displaying), you’ll need an Article 10 Certificate from Defra. All owl species are listed under CITES. Zoo Licensing Act 1981: If you display any wild animal to the public for seven or more days in a year, you must apply for a licence from your local authority. Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976: Requires a licence if you display any wild animal to the public for seven or more days in a year. Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981: Birds of prey listed on Schedule 4 must be registered if kept in captivity. Destructive Imported Animals Act 1932 & The Grey Squirrels (Prohibition of Importation and Keeping) Order 1937: Certain species (e.g., grey squirrels, American mink) require a licence to keep them in captivity. Invasive Alien Species Regulations (EU): Applies to certain species of concern1. Local Authority Application: Anyone wishing to keep an animal covered by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 must apply to their local authority for a license. Prospective owners of such species are carefully inspected before being granted a license2. Remember to check with your local authority for specific requirements based on your location and the type of exotic animal you intend to keep. 12
