jukel123 7,957
This week. Think I will go but it's not as good as in the past. For a start they are going to close all the pubs. There's always a bit of disorder but it seems a total overreaction to me. The fair must bring in many thousands of pounds to the town. In the past there was always a whiff of chaos in the air especially in the evenings. Nowadays the place is crawling with police and RSPCA personnel dressed to look like cops. In the past you could take a punt on a lurcher pup or buy chickens or goldfinches. But I haven't seen livestock for sale for a few years. However I'm still going. Most of the travellers are settled now, but there's one or two still live their lives on the road. I like to people watch them and their horses and dogs . Long live difference. chartpolski 22,908
I thought it was the stop off at Kirkby that was closing the pubs and blocking the verges and lay-by’s ? Some of the lads set off the other day in vardo’s, going over Hartside and dropping down to Kendal. I usually go but haven’t been for a couple of years, might have a look this year if I’m not busy. Cheers.

I’ve never taken a dog with me, far easier without one. Cheers. 9

Cheers. Daily Mail says categorically that all pubs closed for the fair. Westmorland Gazette says some pubs open. Probably the latter source is true. I cannot understand why folk drag their dogs around agricultural shows and fairs. Or why they dress in shooting and fishing gear when they are not pursuing those activities. Guess it's something to do with identity. This is me and here's my dog. Not comfortable for dogs at all. Edited June 3 by jukel123

One year I was walking up the field and a p***y had a cage of lurcher pups, I stopped for a look and the guy said “whippet/greyhound pups, £50”, I carried on walking and he shouted “£40, ok give me £30”, but I kept walking. Coming back down the field, a different p***y was selling the same pups; this time it was “saluki/greyhound pups, £30” ! Again, I kept walking and he was shouting “ how about £20 ? OK, a tenner” ! So ; when in Appleby “ caveat emptor”…… Cheers. 2

He said he didn't know anything about it, not even if it was stock broken. You would think all the warning signs were there but foolishly I bought it anyway. I guess I felt sorry for it. It looked so miserable tied up outside the pub. Anyway, turned out to be a very decent dog with no vices except it was not interested in rabbits, only bigger game. Stupidity sometimes goes unpunished. But not often. Edited June 3 by jukel123
