Has a fall on the road, coming back with Buck  about 10. 30pm  month ago. I go in this feild by me, nothing in it, no rabbits as such couple that's it,, odd fox. Was couple munjacks few years ago but Buck had them, so not seen a fox or munjacks for near 10 weeks now. Got through a gapnin the edge, not allowed in there  but that never stopped me in 35 years with Lurchers lol. Dropped down from edge Buck in front to my right, he ran up road,  thought maybe a cat,   a fox top road, as  watching it both went out of sight. Well carried with me, not proper looking at my  feet,  the road couple small holes in it,  not pot holes, foot went it, I went right over landed on my right knee, what already fooked with worn cartalage, I was told 3 year go I prob need  a new knee cap  Op. But I carried on not to bad. Well I was truly fooked laying on road, god knows how I stood up, I limped back , Buck came, I felt like shooting the old twat. Got to my bungalow, the pain was unreal, went to hospital next morning, had x Ray, nothing broke, but nurse said you squashed your cartalage, or torn it, I said that's all I need with knackerd right knee. She said could take 4 - 8 weeks might bit long with my age 72 in August. Well folks I've been really in the shit, as you prob know my wife died  early Feb, my son in Evesham, I hour from me, 16 mile from Hereford, he working lorry driver does oil drops, his wife works, plus they got 2 young kids, so didn't bother him. My biggest prob  was old Buck, little woody I can loose in my garden for a crap and mooch about. But Buck be lot harder to take out with the pain  in my right knee. Got nobody by me to take him. I did ask the boarding kennels by me, they were booked up till September, I asked dog walker but didn't want any more, I don't she wanted Buck anyway. So folks I had to bite the bullet as they say and walk in lot of pain. I've a support from hospital that got strong type ribs in it both sides, I've had to put that on to walk the dogs, at 1st the pain was fooking killing me, as fields are uneven as you know, that 1/2 norm walk took 50 mins. But  walking bit better now with the support, but take  it off, and I have to take it really slow to stop  the shooting pain in my knee. I hoping it may settle down to as before, I know it not great, but  lot better than now. One thing come out of all this, is when  these 2 dogs have died, that's it no more dogs, OK I've had Lurchers 35 years, but no point in having dogs when things like this happen when live on your own, I never want this lot again No wary.!!

A good read , Ray. Reminds me of a tale I’ve told on here in the past; me and LDR were out coursing first light up Northumberland and then two tractors appeared on opposite sides of the field and came

Sorry to hear this, Ray .

I’m same age but no problems up to now, but I’m resigned to them coming !

Ive got a 28”, 70lb bitch who’s a bit of a handful, but I’m ok with her, in fact seriously thinking of getting a pup !

Hope you recover soon.

Cheers, Richie.

Now that I have lost a few stone, I am still fairly fit , but the jolly old Osteoarthritis can kick in as and when it chooses, and then,...you ain't going nowhere 🤔

AS for the dogs,...well, I've said that I am done and dusted so many times, but like a druggie, I have invariably succumbed to the call of the wild, or been tempted by the offer of a fat and juicy pup.....but,...you have to call a halt sometime....

I miss the hunt, every single day,....but, as time passes by,...I am finding other things to occupy my mind,...but sadly,. not my soul...

Take it easy fellah....👍

Bloody hell.you OK now with your knee. I tell you what I've had few bad bumps in fields lamping,. One night  was out lamping with a mate by weston park seen few munjacks the night before away from the woods. We started lamping I had blaze my collie 3/8 collie 5/8 grey,  only one there but that straight away, we lamped 2 hares, when lights was on us right away, we went flat out and split up, blaze ran with my mate, prob cause the dog  with him. Well ran towards a ditch jumped and hit me head on bank, trying to knocked me self fookin out, rolled in bottom of ditch. Well the  keeper and his mate lamped all the field my mate told me, he held blaze in another wood. I dint get up right I was still dazed, good job then had slow look and seen the lamp flicking about I crawled along the ditch towards the woods, then nipped in the wood got out 15 min after. Another one with another mate after fallow, had quick flick lights on us  and could here dogs as well we both went flat out, I had Buck my mate had his small dog, I got to the wood but  b/wire all round, got Buck over, I just manged to get over only one strand, if been 2 I been fooked getting over. Well they after my mate, he grabbed his dog and just slept over, he was fit bloke alot younger than me. But he cut his side getting over. We both  in the big wood, I kept Buck close to  me  moving about in the dark, I must have fell over 6 times bloody logs etc, I could put me torch on as I could here voices outside the wood, they were there for about 15 mins or so, think dog was bel mal, good job they didn't have loose lol, think was  was attack dog somthing like that. Was black/blue,, cut me hand and banged me head. The last big one was out with a mate on here, out lamping, started to get  over 5 bargate, jumped Buck over, I got 1/2 way over and slipped off. I done my left shoulder in. I pushed the bone from  collar bone, to shoulder out of line. It never go back doctor said at hospital, he said common injury with rugby players, I move it not to bad, but carnt sleep on it very long on that side 8 mins that about it, I turn over etc. So deff had full 35 years lamping, my wife used say that I never get to 60, well I did make 71  , 72 in august but she wasn't far wrong lamping can dangerous for both man and dog haha.

A good read , Ray. Reminds me of a tale I’ve told on here in the past; me and LDR were out coursing first light up Northumberland and then two tractors appeared on opposite sides of the field and came at us in a pincer movement !

Now LDR was half my age and a very fit young bloke. He took off like a whippet, cleared a stream and vaulted the barbed wire fence on the other side.

I approached the stream with trepidation but managed, just , to clear the stream but grabbed the top strand of the wire and fall backwards, ending up horizontal, inches above the water !

I was shouting “pull me up” but he was laughing his head off and videoing on his ‘phone, saying “ this is definitely going on THL !!!

We finally got away, just another adventure doing what we enjoyed !

Cheers.

Bad knees are the pits, both mine were replaced last year, and I'm pain free in that respect. I'm now 67 years old and had a keyhole operation 8 years ago. At that time, the Doctor reported that he had to remove a lot more of the feathering along the edge of the damaged cartage, that stops any more damage, however it means what is left will spread out thinner in the joint speeding up the wear and tear process. Back then, when I went under the knife, I asked the Doctor if it was ok to go pig hunting the very next day. He told while I couldn't undo his repair, the knee might swell up tight. So off I went hunting the next day, all to my wife's dismay. Now fast-forward ten years to a time, I had, due to a bad fall, badly damaged the second joint in my thumb. This joint couldn't be repaired, so it had to be removed, and the two bones shaved and pined together. The dressings required changing over a long weekend, so I was asked to come into the doctors rooms where the nurse would, take a look at the wound & replace the bandage. While I was sitting in one of the rooms, the phone rang out in the main office & the nurse went to answer it. Sitting there looking about I happened to look down and saw my name on an open file, I couldn't help myself and to be fair they were my records. I just lifted a couple of papers out of the way & had a wee read. It was a report in full, of the time I'd had the keyhole surgery on my knee, and the following notes Mr Toole asked if it was ok for him to go hunting the very next day, which he did, and I think his knee has not had a single day's rest since ". I quickly sat back down & on thinking about my comments I'd just read I roared with laugher .....

As we get older, one health problem then leads to another as the body starts to break down aided by the lifestyle we have lead, and I've heard a nasty rumour " no one's getting out alive" My hope is I don't get to the stage I'm shitting my pants and fail to remember my loved ones, that would be a bitch for them. The Red Indians use to speak of a good death, one in battle, but I'd settle for kicking the bucket while I was asleep.
