minion 29
When your are (were) working your dogs on hare pre ban what was it all about to you? were you more intrested in catching big numbers or seeing your dog course the hare? For me it is puerley sport. The kill itself and numbers were not importiant. Just wondered what peoples views were. Quote Link to post
doxhope 2
Both I like a good course just as much as the next man, but, I was always a numbers man Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
For me it has to be both. Theres nothing better than a fast, furious and exciting run on a daytime winter hare, but I also like a clever dog which tries its best to kill the hare, timing its strike and making the kill. If it was all about the course, we would all keep slow dogs that run the hare but dont manage to catch it, so for me it has to be a bit of both. I hate seeing a long, interesting course where the dog runs the hare well but does everything bar pick it up , and if a dog did this on a regular basis I wouldnt keep it in my kennel Edited February 7, 2008 by SJM Quote Link to post
Guest reload
The sport in coursing is running your dog and working a hare, not killing them IMO..... But no running dog owner can say its not a proud moment to catch a few and see you dog do well. We have so few locally I still feel sad when one get caught Quote Link to post
Guest world.hunters
both, i love to see a good course and enjoy it that bit more if the dog gets its reward at the end of it, but if it got away i would never complain. also i would always choose a good course and for the hare to get away, then for any hare to get shot. thats just my opinion tho. Magpie 102
As everyone else has said, it's both for me, whether it's a fast furious run or a long drawn out war of attrition. Seeing a good coursing dog in full flight is one of the great pleasures on earth. There is no greater test for a dog than a strong winter so to own one that is capable of taking them on a regular basis makes your heart burst with pride. It has only ever been a sporting pursuit for me, I've never been interested in killing all or as many Hares in a given area that I can, that would be counter productive. I personally hold the Hare in such high regard that I could never look at it in any other way. No finer athlete exists on gods earth. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Personally its all about the dog doing its job well, and that includes the catch: can't see the point in running something and not catching it. If that were the case I'd have kept coursing Greyhounds only! Quite apart from the the fact that the dog deserves to kill when it's worked its butt off: I must admit that there were times when I felt the hare deserved to get away too, especially when it had tried every trick in the book, but my sympathies will always lie with the predator. suluki 2
as most have already said for me its a bit of both. i love watching a good course but i also like to see my dogs get the kill. but i would rather see a good course and them miss it that see them take a hare out of the seat! Guest Top Chalker
the kill is important to me , but id rather run one good hare and kill it , then run 3 shit hares , i would be more pleased with the one good run ........ Quote Link to post

Sorley x 32
Both, though I don't like to see a kill at the end of a really long course where the hare is just turning in ever decreasing circles. I love that ground devouring run in; then soil spraying twists and turns of two superbly matched creatures, a site that sets the heart pumping like a wild thing. jmho thats all. Quote Link to post

Pre ban Ive stood next to you on a coursing field and heard you rooting for the hare"come on little hare"etc so I know where you stand ,its a dichotomy ,that leaves you torn between admiration for the hare and wanting to see the dog get his hard earned reward.Personally I like to see all hares get away . Unless my dog is running ------------------------ .No seriously when you see a hare that has bested a dog ,then perhaps through bad luck,ie met a dog returning from a previous ,met its end, your sympathy is with the hare, the finest athlete in the British Isles!Inan. thurso jack 3
well why do 3 out of 3 and 5 out of 5 dogs make the big bucks and not the ones who run them well but cant kill them? Suply and demand!! theres a lot less than can do it so obviously there more in demand, and everyone would like to own one. Quote Link to post
Guest bobsuperdog
i like the bit where the dogs are running down the lamp, and take it straight out the squat, the quicker the kill the more in numbers you will take. Quote Link to post
