Greyman 27,912
Have said this before but the lack of money in game these days has pretty much killed things for me 1980s90s deer £100 fox pelts £25 rabbits 50p trout a quid even squirrel tails and jays wings 50p if that money was still on the table there would still be good lads making a living under the radar, but why go out and kill loads just to leave it in a pile the day will come when money will come back into it and true poaching will return its all supply and demand probably be after ww3 when we wake up to what’s real and what’s bollox again
tatsblisters 9,361
The coursing game and hunting with dogs the laws surrounding it have changed beyond imagination that some of us older generation could ever imagine in such a short space in time and not only is it the law that puts you on trial also the cranks on social media. I know for certain anyone walking through your typical council estate with your catch on show it wouldn't be some one trying to buy or cadge a bit of game off you for the pot it would be some sad fecker taking a pic to plaster all over social media asking to know who in their terms is this cruel b*****d. 10

Keepers from the bordering estate to one of my perm's slaughtered all the Foxes there was literally none the farmer is a hunting man wasn't worth a meet on his ground I miss that. Rabbits still high demand I can shift all I catch to Butchers and Pubs not had any comments as I take them in. Well one woman makes it clear she don't like it but she works in the bloody Butchers ffs. Lucky where I live we still have 3 independent Butcher all sell game and its only a small town. We have more than our fair share of gleany greeny hessian bag whole nut sandal wearing red hairs lezies and poofs and crustys so it surprising really. In my view its the Media jumping on every thing and stupid films like Water Ship Down, Bambi etc etc where the animals talk to each other. Awful really when you think what we lost funding will stop at some point mate

Now that I work kelpies (or to be honest, now that I'm older) I tell everybody who asks about them what I use them for. I'm amazed at how many people let their pet dogs chase deer in particular. I've heard everything from 'I can't call him back' to 'it's completely natural' with a huge dose of 'I'm not worried because I'm sure he's not fast enough to catch one.' chartpolski 22,897
Well, I’ve had a long hard think before replying to this thread, but here goes ! I don’t want to upset or argue with anyone, but if lurcher work has been your lifetime sport, I don’t think losing a bit of permission is reason enough to give up the game. I may be wrong, but if you have “ Poacher” in your user name, isn’t it a bit ironic that you are giving up because you’ve lost your permission ? How about travelling if it’s to hot in your area ? How about meeting other people who have permission; I’ve met plenty off here and other sites that didn’t mind me tagging along. I could be wrong, but I’m sure there’s other reasons you are thinking of giving up the lurcher game other than losing your permission. If the lurcher game is important enough in your life, you’ll find a way to keep going. As I say, I don’t want arguments and I’m not having a go at you, and I hope you are happy with whatever you decide. Cheers. 7
eastcoast 4,078
The end of the Halcyon days of the common man hunting for sport? Has always been the preserve of a certain elite in the British Isles. Changed, when, mid- 20th century when people got vans and cars and knocked on doors or did not knock on doors. But got out there and hunted without the fear of being hanged or deported to the colonies.

I’ll try and answer this best I can so you get my reasoning and mind set at the minute . I have a job which a tug and possible conviction if I’m caught could cause problems for me , a lot of my customer base are local farmer/landowners and I doubt they’d take kindly to me having been caught on a neighbors land . I have a family to keep and where when I was younger I wouldn’t have given a toss now I have to . I’m extremely time poor meaning I can literally get some time out a couple of times a week and a local permission was ideal for me , it meant I could be on the ground in twenty mins from my house and have a enjoyable few hours sport . im pretty much a loner by nature I have few friends and I naturally rub people up the wrong way ( that’s what few friends I have have told me ) so I don’t really mix with anyone else who’s into dogs like I am . if you met me you’d probably think I don’t take the Lurcher job seriously, im probably not a serious hunter like most on here im a moocher and hedge backer haha m no argument from me mate I respect your opinion and get what your asking

As I said , I hope you have happiness and success in whatever you’re doing. We all have our lives to live, and it’s all different situations. It’s just sad to me, that another lad has to leave the game because of situations beyond his control. Good luck in whatever path you choose. Cheers.

WILF 46,485
One thing I will say, the lads driving fields and posting on Facebook (whatever anyone thinks of it) DID NOT f**k up hunting, Blair, Banks and a million quid did that. As the OP proves it’s a bridge too far now for many lads to hunt lurchers, it’s the lads who are out saying “f**k the old bill” and chucking big machines of dogs out of car windows who will keep honest working lurchers alive……no tidy clean, mortgage and job and family to support lad is going to be doing that any more. As far as I’m concerned the lads out not giving a shit are only giving a “f**k you” back to the powers that be and good for them I say.

No, Wilfy mate, it’s not blokes throwing dogs out of car windows that are keeping the lurcher game going, and I think you said that a bit tongue in cheek ! Its old blokes like me who walk the land, day and night, and try not to attract attention who keep it going. Its what we do, nothing more , nothing less. Its what we enjoy…… Cheers.

Cheers Arry Your town is infamous for the crusty types mate..lol.. But we are still quite lucky down here that hunting is not frowned upon by most, just got in from a walk on the moors, popped in the East Dart Inn at post bridge, walls covered with in fox hunting tapestry's, all the place mats were fox hunting scenes etc.... it won't be long though, the towns and villages are filling up with City weekenders, get a house in Devon for a fraction of london then moan about the traditions... 2
