Deker 3,478
no i have heard it but never come accross any purley because i dont gut mixys  I don't bother with mixxy rabbits either but for the first day or two of infection there are no external signs. look at the liver ,if it has white spots it has mixy Never noticed this but will check a few in known areas. Mixxy rabbits are meant to be more tender and tastier than uninfected...I have no desire to test the theory! Mixxy was introduced more than 50 years ago to this country and it is inconceivable than no infected ones have been eaten. No cases have ever been reported in humans or in any other animal/bird that I am aware of. Don't be too concerned! Quote Link to post
celticwar 1
i dont gut mixys but if it looks ok doesnt mean it has not got it thats why its best to check liver . like you say no one has ever suffered from it but id sooner not eat it . Quote Link to post
T78 4
im not sure white spots on liver is myxy...it is some illness but cant remember which... and apparently you can eat myxy rabbits with no chance of illness. but i never have, dont even feed them to dogs or ferrets! Quote Link to post

AIRGUNNER 1
A little bit off topic but i was told Mixy was intoduced by man many years ago to try and control the rabbit population. Many years ago a keeper friend of mine reconned when you saw a black rabbbit you would get an outbreak of mixy. Quote Link to post

Many years ago a keeper friend of mine reconned when you saw a black rabbbit you would get an outbreak of mixy. That's a new one on me, how does that work out then when I find mixxy on a site where I have never seen a black bunny? Hey Ho! Lots of country tales, and great fun a lot of them are...got to remember there is a lot of "in breeding" in some rural communities as well :friends:  Quote Link to post
bill88 6
Near me we usually see the myxy rabbits aroung august/september,they are usually all dead by the first frosts.I have also shot rabbits that were healthy but had scarring around the eyes,i'm pretty sure these have recovered from myxy. Fancy this in your stew   Quote Link to post

Coney 3
Celticwar You have had a good response to your post and many interesting comments from others, but after taking a look at Bill88 photos can't imagine anyone wanting to "sample" a mixy rabbit at any stage of this terrible man made disease?
