Guest mush
I think on open land given the hare a good slip 50 - 100 yards she will burn out, on a short slip i should think she would do well if she could kill it before the hare got going. And i would say she wouldn't have the running style and size to make a good open land coursing dog. Edited February 5, 2008 by mush Quote Link to post
Guest reload
Theres a reason why whippets at 20" to the shoulder were slipped at nothing less than 35 yards under NCC rules, they wont get up to there hare in time, and also go unsighted easy.. 100yard slip for a 20" dog of 50% running dog is gonna be a hard run, even with a dog being a racey type. Mark you can ask people there opinion, but until you try it, you wont know...I think a 20" 50% running dog, may struggle at 100yard + slip. ...but the only person who can know for sure is you. You want people to say it cant be domne or such like, then you can go out and prove us ALL wrong and put a post up. why not get out and do it, and see, saves the hassle and typing? Quote Link to post
Guest mush
mark black bitch is about 1/8 collie the rest whippet greyhound i've seen a lot of the whippet greyhound ( on the wil-hay side ) blood thats gone into her run and if they have a chance of killing quick with short slips they will but when the hare gets going thats it. tyson 1
Kipper has a 19/20'' saluki whippet and he will match anyone on daytime hares also a 20'' bitch made the semi final of the forley cup , she beat TAZ a £12000 dog who is about 25/26'' and strong with it as well ,so its not just down to size , its all about the dog itself its the size of the fight in the dog not the dog in the fight but i do agree a good big un is better than a good little un , well thats what me last girlfriend says me mate bred some pups , they now 16month old , one went to wales and the fella only ever lamped him on rabbits , hes caught literally hundreds and carries them all back alive apart from the odd one , so this fella aint happy about the odd one dying so he gave him back to me mate to see if he would make a good hare dog as this is what he was bred for , but hes gonna take a lot of schooling cos hes green as grass on hares as hes never ran them so me mate probly gonna get rid cos hes got loads of dogs and cant be arsed messin about Edited February 5, 2008 by tyson Quote Link to post
lucky 578
mark i think you will burn your dogs out on hares....just because they have enough stamina for a night on the rabbits does'nt mean they will kill daytime hares.... it's a totally different ball game...a daytime hare is running at a much faster pace over a much longer distance....where lamped rabbits are just short dashes really...with a bit of recovery time in-between runs... i've seen some excellent lamping dogs that could'nt even get on terms with a daytime hare properly.... this is my oppinion anyway...
