Man has been walking the earth for many thousands of years , and in relative terms , it's only very recently,  that we've been putting all of the dead people in the same place . In real terms throughout the very early history of man, you either got buried where you fell , or got left on top for the earth (and everything on it) to consume you.

That's an awful lot of bodies under the ground that were walking on. Not that most will still have any visible remains.

My old man when he was around 11 12 yrs was out with his Dad fishing the Thames and they found a bloated body caught up under tree so granddad had him hold it with a big stick so didn't float off, while he peddled off to the local undertakers as it was worth 10 Bob at the time lol

It was some actor that suicided at Teddington so must have come through 3 locks along the bottom before gassing up I suppose lol

We once rode past a car park in the new forest on hound exercise. Got about 50 yards down the rode and the huntsman stopped and turned back. He jumped off his horse and went running over to a car and tried to get the door open. Realising it was locked he looked for a rock to smash the window while shouting to us to go get an ambulance. This was before we all had mobiles so we rode back to a house down the road. Banging on the front door a woman answered in her dressing gown to be confronted with a man, a horse and 50 hounds in her garden asking her to ring an ambulance. 

Bloke had gassed himself in his car, stuck a rag up the exhaust. Argument with his Mrs apparently 

Sorry it's not a drowning story but that was my suicide discovery experience.
