Has anyone been watching

Recommended Posts

Have been watching them alright. Was a bit dubious at the start thinking it might be the usual hyped up for armchair-soldier crap but have to say I think he did a good job. Have some very close mates who are bootnecks and SBS heading back out there for their 3rd stint in a few months. Must be pretty hard for uk lads to go home after that and see chavs standing around on street corners scabbing off your state on the dole.

Yep... to see those 18yr old lads out there, fighting for thier & our lives, and some of the low lifer's round here making trouble, makes you puke. The little shites that cant be arsed to get off thier backside should be made to join the forces if they cant "find" a job after 12 months ..... maybe?..... :icon_redface: dont want to start a massive debate :icon_redface:

Excellent program, what surprised me was they bombed and shot at the taliban but don't go in and do body counts? Also how the hell do they tell the difference between the taliban and normal Afghanstan civves going about their lives??? Looked like an impossible war to win which could go on and on................

The situation in Afganistan is very diferant from any "regular" conflict that we have been involved with do date. But without a doubt we are the best rained army in the world when it comes to this type of conflict.

The public perseption of the Taliban being a dysfunctional disorganised bunch of rebels is far from true; sure their command structre is as organised as any western force. They have however suffered a number of defeates that are taking its toll on them, and are in regions much less operationally capable than in the past.

Its important not to lose sight of who and why the Taliban came into existance, the political make up of their force, their relationship with political elements in Pakistan, and their countenance to the Mujahadin. It is a much much bigger situation than the perception of "us" against a terrorist training drug cartel.

The guys in all three armed forces (and each reserve element) are doing sterling work; the army in particular are under imense presure, with poor pay, living standards and equipment; with little or no reward and motivation from the country or government for doing their job. We are dependant on the pride, respect, cameradirie and patriotism of a chosen few and the population and government owe them a great deal - the leasty of which are proper, decent, priority medical care, a living wage, standards of accomadation at home better than those in the field, not to mention equipment that is up to the tast in the right place at the right time.

The forces are in a dificult position of being run by the MoD. A ministry run by a mix of politicians, civil servants and senior soldiers. Unlike other ministries (agriculture is not run by farmers, health not run by doctors, education not run by teachers) the MoD has a mix of staff; the political argument being that the MoD should, like other ministries be run solely by politicians; with the forces arguing that they should run the ministry due to the specialist nature of its work, that is where this conflics and missmanagement comes in. Buget constraints, lack of communication, poor decision making etc.

The government has gotten in the way and is purpousfully strangling the armed forces. While the govt argues it is anually increasing defence spending (which it is) it is not however inline with cuts previously made, with increased intrest rates, increased costs of operations and equipment and a huge increase in the commitment of manpower.
