I think it’s because he don’t want Europe on Russias door step and the Russian people getting a glimpse of all the European “free” money…….it would seriously destabilise his position and in much wider terms (as we are all experiencing) ultimately be bad for Russia if they eventually got rid of Putin and embraced the EU.
