Find an NICEIC member. The Scottish gent was probably not a member and so would not be able to provide you with an Electrical Installation Certificate, at least he was honest. The NICEIC assess potential members and carry out an annual assessment on all members. People have this attitude of " elf n safety gone mad", particularly when it effects the pocket but when it comes to electricity and gas you need a suitably qualified installer who will certify the installation. Not infallible of course, I have came across members who abuse it and sign off work for none NICEIC members for a price so ask to see evidence of their membership. There is a NICEIC website that should show you members in your locality. Edited February 3 by eastcoast

Thanks for that much appreciated, at least I know more now of what to look for , it still doesn’t help though that I cannot find any one who actually want the work,

If you tie them up and allow yourself a bit of leeway for abuse…. They will re-wire your house and clean up after themselves… so I’m told

Aaron Leverton 5
I refuse to pay for electrical work any more. I spent 10 years in the Navy as an Electrical Engineer and now I am an Install and Commissioning Engineer for a large multinational so I do it all myself (I even got her indoors pulling cables recently in the loft !). Apparently without a City and Guilds Level 3 (ive got L4,L5,L6 and L7 in various related subjects but computer says no), I cant even register with the NICEIC or NAPIT if I wanted to , so I guess I'll just crack on myself Its not for hire or reward so I'll take my chances. If the customer sues me.... she can sleep in the spare room... in the dark with the cat! That said, when it comes to signing things off, I agree with you, and I even struggle to get decent work done off of friends of the family !! I was recently charged an extra £100 by my mates dad, on an EICR inspection, for "fixing an oven socket" and they left the damn thing exposed, without a face plate, bare wires, energised !!! Unreal ! If you were in Oxfordshire / Wiltshire then I have a great guy but the NE is too much of a commute even for him. Feel free to shout for any advice you may need and Ill let you know if my NE based pals have anyone reliable to recommend.

Borr 5,803
I ended up getting a mate in, seems to be a bit of a shortage (pun intended) I don't touch it , previous owner of my place obviously had a keen interest but with about 200 spotlights that have a tendency to flicker he should find another interest. This has inspired my next topic, showers ....
