Wolfdog91 6,929
What's outdoor quirks y'all see around y'all that are kinda a regional thing or something y'all have seen much or as much outside of your area ? Seems about every county region town ect has some .Down here ( my area specifically) some ive noticed are * never field dress deer *Freezing fish whole, like don't gut then or anything was them off when you get one toss them in a bag and thaw them out and process them when your wanting to eat. At least with small fish like bream * About any semi serious fisherman will be rocking red cigar floats on their rods. * taking neck shots whenever possible * black and milds when fishing in the summer * just about all deer and wild hog meat gets ground into sausage of some sort not a ton of butcher cuts or anything * Getting permission usually requires you know someone the property owner knows * Eveyone seems to know and use the same two or three knots fishing but know on knows the names * people hate hogs ...but also like them to where if they know they have them in their property they will complain but not let you hunt them....it's weird... * if there cows.....good luck.....just good luck * just about eveyone calls a spinning reel a open face ..but will also call call a bait caster an open face ...an no one seems to know what a spin cast is * people think your weird if you don't use a snap swivel ( only ever brass it seems) to your hook or you use a midline swivel.....wire leaders are more acceptable though for some reason Anyhow that's some of mine what about yall
Born Hunter 17,751
Picking up etiquette. Here in the midlands and I think the south pickers up only put there dogs on runners mid-drive. Up north they pick everything during the drive.

To be honest, that's the main reason I prefer the Cornish way, as I find it easier to spread the clotted cream on top of the jam rather than the other way around. Though I am part Cornish too.

Arry 21,554
Saying like "Only harvest shell fish when theres a R in the month" apply I suppose. "Only harvest Rabbits when theres a R in the month" but the season is shorter these days well it is down here. Don't know if old sayings like "Don't cast a clout till May is out" apply. "When the wind is in the East the rabbits bolt the least when the wind is in the West rabbits bolt the best" heard it said about fishing "when the wind is in the East the fish bite the least" But have known many good Bass and Cod caught when its all stirred up by an Easterly. Personally I don't like ferreting in an East wind alway seem to end up with trouble. Cheers Arry

It's either through knowing the right people or earning trust. Fishing floats over here are a pretty varied lot. They range from the cigar sized bobbers you describe - used for sea and pike fishing- down to tiny things no bigger than a cocktail stick - for delicate biting fish. In between these extremes there are some weird and wonderful designs with equally weird names. I grabbed a handful of reels for a photo shoot .The two on the left would be known as "multiplier reels" ,though small ones as in the photo are often called "bait- casters". The bottom drum reel is known as a " centre pin ". The three reels to the right are generally known as "fixed spool " reels . Though they are sometimes called "spinning reels" , and a really outdated name for them is a "threadline". Wire leaders ,we call them "traces" are the norm for anything with teeth. Over here where most fishing is catch and release some fish are inevitably caught repeatedly . Some anglers actually come to recognise the fish and even give them names . Even more weird is that these anglers then apply antiseptic to the hook wound before releasing the fish into the water. This is quirky. One local thing round here in Sussex is calling every rubbishy, cobbled-up , run- down ,wired- up gateway a Hampshire Gate. And the people of the county of Hampshire call it a Sussex Gate .
WILF 46,672
In the south: Liquor on your pie & mash, NOT gravy ! Fish & Chips come WITHOUT mushy peas ! Young southerners never used to sport that barely visible tash that looks like a stiff breeze would blow it off No business close for lunch Rest of the British isles: You only get spice bags from the chinky in Ireland They put anything in a pie in Scotland ! In Sunderland it’s 1983 People are friendlier as you go further north You hunt packs of dogs on foot in the fell & hill country as opposed to mounted in the south for fox, but you hunt on foot everywhere for mink The midlands don’t exist…..it’s like a twilight zone between north and south Black Country people ain’t brummies Anything north of Watford gap is “up north” and anything below Manchester is “down south” Nobody can understand a word people from Birmingham are saying ……..got to go football now, more later !
