In the story borstals used to compete in cross country events and the borstal governors liked their inmates to win so they got the reflected glory. The main character in the story is allowed privileges so he can train and he runs miles everyday. The borstal governor is convinced his boy will win the competition. Come the day of the big race the main character absolutely pisses the race, but he suddenly stops and refuses to breast the winning tape. He runs on the spot for two minutes whilst the guy in second catches up and crosses the winning line which means the governor doesn't get his cup.. It was his way of saying f**k you governor, I'm nobodys uncle Tom. Brilliant story and film. Edited January 27 by jukel123

As is the judiciary. That's where raw power and money lies. Particularly in the days of empire. Of course they are attracted to the military, they own large parts of the country and they want to keep a firm hold on what they have. It's no surprise a public school curriculum has 'service' at its core. The royals are big on 'service'. This translates as doing f**k all and holding out the begging bowl to the rest of us. Service also means recruiting people like us, who own very little, to defend their land and estates. In exchange they give us medals and ribbons. Historically speaking “service” spoke to something higher than yourself, in this instance the “nation”……it’s why people felt part of and connected to the land beneath their feet. As we have diluted and destroyed and done away with that to reach the more socialist model of Britain we see today so you see generations (as clearly seen in this thread) who don’t feel invested in the nation because the nation has been destroyed. Quote There is a 'hidden' curriculum in any educational system. The public schools teach their pupils public speaking, debating...confidence. State schools teach kids to shut up and be quiet. Public schools teach entitlement, privilege, superiority...arrogance. State schools teach lack of self esteem and obedience. What wrong with teaching kids confidence ?…..and as a former school governor you could have changed the “teaching kids to shut up and be quiet” bit if you had wanted too. I don’t think they teach them “arrogance, entitlement, privilege” at all, that’s utter baloney ! Again, if you are saying state schools teach “a lack of self esteem” you could have done something about that. I don’t think they do, I think they offer equality of opportunity which kids (and their family’s by supporting them) will either grasp or not. What left wing principals have done for a stone cold fact is make it almost impossible to get rid of teachers who are failing kids badly in the state system, congratulations ! What various governments have done is mire schools and SLTs down in ludicrous regulation and box ticking, detracting from the business of actually teaching kids. In some cases in the more radical left wing schools, it’s more about promoting gay, black, transsexual agendas than anything else. No such nonsense in private or faith schools. Quote Separating children from their parents at seven years old to enter a single sex school also produces a lot of unhappy, neurotic, sexually confused and repressed adults. Fagging, buggery, rape are also, unfortunate aspects of the hidden curriculum in public schools. It makes us the laughing stock of the world that our politicians are chosen primarily from this background. Politicians are not the best in class at Oxford or Cambridge, they ain’t even the third best…..those people are too busy doing proper jobs. Politicians are mostly social climbers or head case ex “activists” with some shite degree from Durham and a history of student Union rabble rousing. There are of course notable exceptions but it’s a fact that parliament comes from a range of social backgrounds, the thing they share is an ambition to land a place at the feast ! Quote I wrote earlier that I used to be on the school board of a comprehensive school and that a female pupil, achieved 5 A levels but was rejected by Oxbridge. We wrote to the uni concerned and asked for feedback on her failed interview. They replied that she did not "impress" during the interview. Which is Orwellian speak for we 'rejected her because she wasn't one of us. Presumably lots of kids with poorer qualifications did impress. I wonder what type of school they came from? Has it occurred to you that she may just have not been as good in her interview as others ? You were one of her school governors, you should all have made sure those kids were better prepared ! Quote How many working class, poorly educated canon fodder soldiers died in WW2 as opposed to public school educated officers? It’s a guess but I’d say as a ratio, officers are more likely to be killed ? Quote It amuses me that when I criticise the British class system I am accused of bitterness and anger. Damn right. Lots of talented people are frozen out of top jobs because of our medieval system of educational apartheid. The country is led by sleazy, public school incompetents. No, they are frozen out because they don’t have the skills or the language or the brains or the qualifications….multiple choice, pick some. Quote The OECD recently published a report which demonstrated that the UK worker earns 8800 grand less than our European equivalents. We also have a failing health system, a near privatised dental system, crumbling roads and infrastructure, insulting sick pay .... and pensions which are a joke. But we are one of the most highly taxed economies. This dire situation falls on the shoulders of the parliamentarians. Remind me again where are our leaders educated? How many members of the cabinet are public school educated? How many of our former prime ministers were Eton educated? The country hasn’t only existed for 13 years, both party’s got us to this point……people like Skinner and Corbyn and Beven have all been part of this slow decline ! Your propositions are childish and inane mate, nobody is holding you or anyone else back ! Have you considered becoming a Liverpool supporter ? chartpolski 23,145
“Laughing stock of the world” ? Not in my experience. I’ve travelled a fair bit; lived with , worked with and spent considerable time with many diverse nationalities, and their view of the British ranged from open admiration to grudging respect. Even in the Middle East, where they, probably have more reason to hate us than most, I found it was only the extremists that hated us, and not so much Britain, but the west in general. Being British still has kudos and opens doors in most of the world. The people I’ve met who actually hate Britain are usually British themselves and mostly on the far left of the political spectrum who have this completely insane idea that places like Venezuela, Russia, North Korea are workers Shangrila’s ! I think during the war they were known as 5th columnist’s. Cheers.

I used to go up and visit a friend of mine who was on this forum, younger than me and his circle of friend were all from what most would class “well to do” familys, been to school and knocked about with Prince Harry and all that caper. You couldn’t have wished to meet a nicer group of lads, polite, well spoken, no airs and graces but the difference was their sense of what the world could offer……their horizons were just bigger ! In our little evening chats in the pubs they were talking about everything they had done from cycling the alps, working on ranches in Australia, attending art shows around Europe…..what other group of 20 something lads are talking about that ? You won’t find some oik off the plot having those conversations even though he could if he wanted forego the two weeks in magaluf and hire a bike in France or visit the cultural sights of Europe or go online and find a placement on a ranch in Oz……but he doesn’t, his world extends to a Range Rover on the jib, beard lotion and railing some lines on a Saturday night surrounded by equally inane people. Dont get me wrong, I’ve been that lad, but as you grow up you hopefully grow a bit of sense and see the value in things and if only the state schools had showed us all those exciting possibilities and captured our imagination ?…..who knows how many kids would be rising above ? Being thick as shit for the sake of it is a very bad look. Edited January 27 by WILF

You could have not had a mortgage and tucked your few quid away and gone and done any of that in reality, you just chose to do something else. Nobody said you couldn’t did they, you did what you wanted to do. I was the same, just out grafting but no mortgage, just wanking my money up the wall every week like millions of other lads because we didn’t know anything else, our horizons wasn’t that big. When you came out of state comp you went to work, that’s what you did. But if I’d had the knowledge and chose to do something else nobody would have been stopping me at the airport asking to see a family history.
