No one really knows lol, meks me smile when they have a class titled working lurcher wtf that about ,then usually a dog that's done note but sniff it's owners grippers wins it ffs

I’ve judged a lot of shows and yes, the “working lurcher” class is a strange one.

I once asked a woman what work her dog had done and she said “ it chases squirrels in the park” !

Cheers.

Like every other type or cross you'll get good and bad ones, some people swear by them others wouldnt give 1 kennel space, it really is up to you and what you expect it to do, Ive had and seen some re

Personally I think one man's allrounder is different to another man's allrounder. Also as time goes by you maybe go for different methods and different species. It's no one trick pony

Both nice honest jukels,...but sadly,.. both products,...of a well calculated and carefully planned advertising campaign😉

What does a judge look for in a lurcher exactly I have never understood really.  I have been to these shows and won on the racing but even in the working show class got nowt lolIMG-20240202-WA0002.jpg.7e02c2645f62a0c1a7128dade0d954ed.jpg

That's always puzzled me. There is nothing wrong with the physical conformation of whippets and greyhounds, they have been developed to run fast, the things that they may be lacking which is gained from introducing other types of dog into the mix cannot be judged or confirmed from physical appearance, apart from a better coat. Is the perfect show lurcher a greyhound or whippet with rough coat? It's all just a bit of fun though.

That’s why I liked judging whippets; they have a breed standard to compare each dog against.

With lurchers you can only look at conformation and condition.

Some look like they are workers, for obvious reasons, others look like they’ve never been off the lead.
Don’t take it too seriously, take it as a day out , meeting old pals, making new ones and seeing dogs of all shapes and sizes !

Cheers.

And the elusive thing, presence? Some have it, some don't.

The entered terrier classes at some shows are worse than the working lurcher class imo veteran terriers with a full mouth of teeth a not a mark on em….. ten Bob rosettes attract some mad folk

Thank God for that.

I mention on another thread about a man who was judging a “bull cross” class and he said he would never put up a marked up or brindle bull cross !

Yep, that would be a hell of a working bull cross that didn’t have a mark on it !

Cheers.

People like to win stuff, but some seem to be obsessed by it lol

My take on lurcher shows is I witnessed some folk taking it really seriously even as far back as the early 80s in defence of those that I have met they all have been pretty decent types of folk and their dogs well kept and looked after. I always think you pay your money and you take your chance as most serious working lurcher folk take a lurcher pup on knowing the working history of its sire and dam. I remember breeding a litter out of my two dogs in my profile picture in the 80s that were good decent hardy working lurchers but a few lads at the time decided to take a chance on a pup out of a greyhound and a collie from the well known breeder purely for money at the time I found baffling tbh.
