I’ve seen a fair number of dogs that will go on to the front end eventually once a deer’s been stopped but what I’d call proper deer dogs are rare, the sort of dogs that just have a knack for getting deer over and under control & making it look easy

Yes some dogs just know how to get a deer under control they make their job look really easy, brains and technique.

Smaller species, CWD/Roe, even up to fallow does that’s what id expect really, minimal damage & a broken neck. You won’t get dogs finishing off fallow bucks and reds though, not often anyway

Seen it a few times on fallow bucks with Molly her favourite hold was wind pipe just enough to finish the job really quick. Most dogs grab a full mouth of neck not her just the wind pipe she could have them dead really quick doing that.

spot on i have to be able to move em mate and want meat me personal want em killed quick when you have accidents with big uns  and you need to find em  i don’t feel comfortable letting em go threw that and the grunting bring you on top quick 

but each to there own

Nice to see dogs figuring things out, I once had a red hind who’s neck was so big the dog had to hang on to her by the ear, she was glad of a rest when all was sorted out

I’ve marvelled at how the Ozzy and NZ dogs seem to instinctively go for an ear hold, wether it be deer, pig, goat;

To be fair I wouldn’t want a dog grabbing a deer by the ears on a regular basis, I imagine you’d lose a lot with that kind of style, the one I mentioned was just a one off really
