CAN SOME OF THE EXPERTS ON HERE TELL ME WHAT MAKES A NORFOLK LURCHER. AND HOW IT GETS ITS NAME. HAVE FOUND ALOT OF CONFLICTING ARGUEMENTS ON THIS. THANKS.

These have long dissapeared along with the fabled Smithfield .Mick Douglas bred some very good workers who had what is considered a norfolk appearance as did Aubrey Fryer.I would regard anyone s claims to breed these or a "tumbler "with extreme scepticism.Inan.

Is that one of aubreys old dogs magwitch :clapper:

Ive not seen a knorfolk type for twenty years at least in the flesh as has been stated mick douglas had a good line of knorfolks free from saluki blood and tidy hare dogs fawn and wheaton soft coated dogs of deerhound and collie type theres been many changes to the lurchers makeup with todays popularity and types are soon lost. I know aubry fryer tried to resurect the breed using some sort of briard or bouvier blood but some of his dogs came out looking like terrier xs.

I reckon theyve gone the same way as the fawn deerhounds that i would have thought were more responsible for the creation of the knorfolk.

A fella i know of years back, met Mick Douglas, apparently, he lived on the fen, like a hippy? :hmm::)

Frank.

Thats the story Frank......bout 20 years ago, used to see a bloke walking a beautiful fawn dog on my way to work, early shift, frequently he'd be carryin a hare or two, stopped him for a chat (well ya just gotta ain't ya!). The dog was off Mick Douglas an he confirmed the way he lived.

As far as 'Norfolk' lurcher goes, yep, his dog was from Norfolk but it's a 'type', referring to looks rather than a 'breed', though by the game this bloke caught, seemed like a very handy type, i'm sure.:thumbs:

You could argue that due to history we no longer need a smithfield and although it may be possible to breed a lookalike replacement, that doesn't mean it will act or think like one. Last week I met a dog which was the spitting image of my kelpie but solid black; he turned out to be a staff x alsation, and I wouldn't want to let that round up a huge mog of merinos. Sorry to drift from the point, but surely the important thing is to breed a dog which acts like a smithfield if that's your thing rather than just looks like one. :hmm: I was only trying to make a point but with every sentence I feel I'm digging myself a deeper and deeper hole.
