My obsession with dogs and poaching in hindsight was my downfall as a career and job's mostly played second fiddle. The job I wanted on leaving school was working for British Steel as it was good mone

Turned out OK, like others on here a big interest in the outdoors, and wildlife etc but needed a degree (apparently!)...however I am really bad at exams, but pretty good at course work, so I did a HND in Environmental Science, which had a 50% course work/exam split, used to get 70% for course work 35% exams but it was a pass, got my degree through a course with 40% course work (the highest i could find then, nowadays more degree are 50 50 split)  in Environmental Science. Could not get a start in the Environmental  sector so ended up in Community Development, turns out i was quite good at it, now work in a field which combines Community Engagement/Development stuff with local Environment projects, so i am quite happy.

I always wanted to be a vet and regret not doing it but unfortunately my brain and being told what to do by someone that speaks to you like shite don't get on so that one went tits up.

I should have stuck at plastering too instead of digging trees up for 20 odd years out in the fecking rain like I am now.

My brother worked in the porn industry for a bit with Kathy Barrys company as a web designer. He left when they bought a bulk load of thongs and asked him to spread a dab of wall paper paste on the gusset of each pair so they could sale them on as the used pants off the different girls, not all glitz and glamour😉.

I wouldn’t want to change my career path; it went on an upward trajectory from leaving school and becoming a diesel mechanic to retiring 20 years ago as an Airline Engineering Manager.

There were a lot of factors involved in this including luck, being in the right place at the right time, willing to work hard and take risks, willing to go out my comfort zone and learn new skills and not least having two bosses who saw something in me and pushed me hard and gave me opportunities to move up.

Cheers.

Im guessing progressing from the shop floor would have been much more difficult if you had stayed in the UK?  You generally need to have been from the right background to do that in the UK.

Absolutely no different to what I have done, despite all the downs I massively enjoyed every last “up”

In a parallel reality ?…….Midwife or some sort of care worker/councillor.

That’s if I didn’t play for West Ham of course !

The two bosses I mentioned were in the UK , the first one insisted I did one day release and one night class in mechanical engineering and one day release and one night class in electrical engineering when I was an apprentice.

The second boss was when I’d served my time and he must have seen something as he sent me on all sorts of courses, one of which was to Smiths Industries at the beginning of the tachograph era to learn how to fit and calibrate them and also put me through the HGV class 1 and PSV  test so I could “prove” the installation.

After that he moved me to the R&D department of their hydraulic subsidiary were I put the design labs drawings into working models . It helped that I could understand blue prints and technical drawings and visualise them in 3d.

I absolutely loved working for that company, but the pay was crap and with a new wife and child I left to work abroad with their blessing and a letter saying I could have my job back if it didn’t work out.

So that was the “luck” part; if it wasn’t for those two bosses having faith in me, who knows how it may have ended up ?

Cheers.

Looking back I wished I’d joined the military Falklands was kicking off about the time I could have started my career I just didn’t have the discipline then what I have now, although I like the job I do know dealing with incidents on the railway every day is different I could literally write a book about it, some days and weeks are mad and you have to ask did I just attend that.

Well, born 1952, and didn't have a great educational experience, in them days, if you weren't in the A class, you were factory fodder, building site fodder, I did both. OK I ended up with well payed job at my local brewery, was there 25 years. So I done OK really, no trade or education to speak off, but had good wage, and fooked lower back, and knee now. But one thing I always fancied doing was ( glass blowing) doing that kind of job, and getting good wage for it be good job I reckon.? But like everything in life, you can't live in the past, what's done is done, as they say. 🤔

I was working for a bloke who did maintenance at weekends in factories: he would employ electricians, painters, joiners, painters, cleaners , labourers etc. I was his kind of right hand man. So I thought I could set up on my own. When I tendered for a contract I would exaggerate and blag. My first break was given to me a bloke who dealt with tenders for a big firm. I produced a CV and a price and pestered him  non stop. Eventually he said to me, " look if you get the job it will be on merit and price and don't insult me by offering me any sweeteners." I eventually got  that tender and many more from that bloke. An absolute, straight down the  middle gent.
