chartpolski 23,146
If I won big on the lottery I would put my four great nephews through private school. My grandson is already being privately educated , it’s expensive, but his Saudi family pay the best part of that, all I do is basically buy his sports kit and put a bit into a small trust fund each month. Yes, I know people will say they went to the local comprehensive and they did ok, well, so did I, but I’d say the vast majority of my education and qualifications came after I left school. Comprehensive gave me the basics, but now with the left wing education system putting more emphasis on “inclusion and diversity “ than the “three r’s” I wouldn’t want my family being indoctrinated by the left wing, woke system if I could help it ! Cheers. 8

Better than sticking kids in boarding schools imo.

Good choice,it’s a lot more personal than a comp.

Private education doesn’t have to be at boarding school. Both my children were privately educated, I was lucky the company paid for it. My daughter never boarded and my son only boarded for the final three years. My grandson is privately educated but lives at home. Of course people can do well after comprehensive education, I did, but I think private education gives a better start in life in general. Cheers. 1

Big rowie 187
Started off wrong. Not learning at school leaving with no grades at all. Found out later that I have dyslexia hence why I couldn't read well. Started in high pressure water jetting. Cutting concrete with water done for years all over uk. Had my 2nd child and started at a company in home town. Environmental waste company made my way up the ladder now I look after sections of it. If 15 year ago I'd of thought of where I would be never of thought this. Love the job bit stressful but rewarding. As for my son he's in the RAF cadets having discipline right into his computers like his uncle showing him what to go for. Fair happy with him. He's also into hunting ferreting, dogs, going beating allsorts. Daughter is still young but showing interest in hunting. I regret not taking the chance with my wife sooner wasted 15 year then eventually went for it and have been married to her for 5 years and counting.

I am uneasy about private education. No surprise there. But leaving aside the politics, kids who go to minor private schools don't get the same breadth of education as comprehensive kids . Small and medium private schools can't afford to employ the same range of subject specialists as a local authority school can. Anecdotal, but a guy I used to shoot with sent his kids to a local private school and regretted it. His kids weren't academic and the school did not teach practical subjects. He felt in hindsight that his kids lost contact with their old friends and were intimidated by the real world. For example, they were too shy to go into local pubs because of the rough clientelle they might meet. My lads kept in contact with their old childhood friends and made new ones from the 'posh' world which is healthier imo. When you are talking Eton and Harrow etc, these schools teach as a by product superiority and arrogance and often shocking incompetence. The kids make lifelong useful contacts so the system is one big club which conspires against the rest of us. Its a very unhealthy aspect of the UK. Private schools can afford to employ loads of teachers so class sizes are very small and kids get individual attention. So I don't think it's fair to compare their A level results with kids who've been in huge classes. Universities have begun to address this unfairness but they then get it in the neck and are accused of unhealthy positive discrimination. I'm all for it personally, I think it's fairer. WILF 46,612
Interesting subject, I think as parents we have to tread careful…..our idea of success and happiness may not be a kids idea of success and happiness. And I think we have to be mindful of that…..build good people and the rest will work itself out imho. As for private education, like any other school if it works for them and they are happy there then great…..what the best private schools do, imho, has nothing to do with results…..no, what they do is put you in social circles that expand your horizons. I was talking to the Head of Beningdon (spel ? Lol ) and she was telling me that for life, any ex Beningdon girl can phone the school or another ex Beningdon girl if they have a problem and they will have help….that’s how the network works. You won’t get that in the local comp ! Lol Edited to add: The spelling is Benenden ! And that folks is what happens when you get aimed out at 14 ! We are obviously on the opposite sides of the spectrum here , but my grandsons school has a maximum of 12 children per class, my great nephews local comprehensive has over 30 per class. Both my children were taught to international baccalaureate standards which I think gave them better chances in life than A levels or GCSE’s or whatever they give now, and they were certainly not intimidated by the “real world” , in fact they saw far more of the real world than if they had gone to a comprehensive on a sink estate ! And they had far less chance of being stabbed for their trainers! Private schools are subject to the same teaching standards as any other school and would soon be closed down if they didn’t reach those standards. You say “putting politics aside”, but your last post is straight out of the Lefts handbook, do you want to abolish grammar schools aswell ? I firmly believe in giving children the best education possible, for me, that is a private education, for you it isn’t , I can respect your opinion without agreeing with it. Cheers. 17 minutes ago, jukel123 said: I am uneasy about private education. No surprise there.
