Cheers. Was it the Austrian's using them against the French? If memory serves correctly, read it somewhere. Due to the silence and accuracy of the rifles Napoleon considered them giving the enemy an unfair advantage . Downside was you got one shot shot and it took ages to re-charge the shark skin reservoir.

No mate, don't do that, I enjoy your posts, but you have to understand the UK isn't the land of the free. we need a license to fish, a license to watch tv, we can't own handguns,we can only hunt rabbits and rats with a dog, (you can't even do that in Scotland now), I could go on and on but it gets too depressing.... The thing is, its not always been like this, When i was younger you could walk through the village and even go in the pub with a gun, Back then people accepted that guns and dogs and hunting were normal, The kids were brought up with it, Fast forward to now and not many kids born here can afford to live here, Instead its full of ex bankers, Solicitors and so on that want to retire to the countryside. Even an ex council house here, and there's not many of them will cost you upwards of £280,000. Hers an example of what the villages are becoming, When i lived in another village a few years ago. A couple purchased the house right next to the church, Within weeks they were putting complaints in to the parish council about the noise from the church bells, Then it was the problem of hearse`s parking at the gates of the church but making it difficult for them to get off there drive. eastcoast 4,138
I have Googled the air powered weapon from Nepoleonic era. The Girardoni, Italian design but used by Austrian army. 30 shots but took 1500 strokes of the pumping mechanism to recharge. At the time air powered military weapons or sporting rifles where better in many aspects to gun powder, but flawed. Modern technology has ironed out some those flaws, for sporting use anyway. Mirroring car development in a way, electric motors are nothing new.

I don't know about the Napoleonic rifles being single shot but a lot of the big bore air rifles in the 19th century were actually repeaters; capable of 20 or more shots . The big advantage of them was that they negated the need to keep gunpowder dry .

If you were shooting doves off the power lines in the city limits here, you would very quickly find yourself surrounded by a rapid response armed police squad with a helicopter overhead ! And I'm not exaggerating ! Cheers. He don’t know shit…. Educate him lol Blighty is not only draconian ( Tony f****n Blair) it’s mental! More ballsacks. More pricks have a gun than a man or woman wanting to protect theirs. Edited November 6, 2023 by mushroom
