Been reading a merchant navy book and it was an interesting way of life that disappeared overnight. The dock areas must of been interesting vibrant places all over the world. My dad did pest control on all the docks via British rail, I still have his old diarys. Manchester and Salford was definitely on his beat
jukel123 8,023
Yes I have great memories of my childhood in Salford. Our prefab was sandwiched between two internationally famous pubs for prostitutes and there was seaman's mission a hundred yards away so it always lively and interesting. You would see exotic looking different seamen from all over the world: Black, brown yellow, Sikhs, frenchies would come over selling onions and there were seamen with weird national dress who you couldn't place. The nickname for the area was the Barbary Coast. The vice went over our heads apart from the discarded condoms in the entries near the pubs. There was always violence outside the pubs but it was nothing to do with us so we felt perfectly secure. Kids in those days were totally free..Great days. Edited November 16, 2023 by jukel123

They taught us marching and military songs and not much else. To be fair I quite enjoyed singing them and can still remember then word for word. But even then we realised we were being prepared for obedient life in the factory or go to war. It was pretty shit although we didn't realise it at the time. Corporal punishment was a daily occurrence but you could always be defiant by grinning at the teacher when he was caning you or saying thank you at the end. I was put into a home for bad boys for 6 months when I was 13. I had committed the serious crime of running across an asbestos roof with some mates and falling through. Parkour they call it now. OK we did explore the offices of the factory and opened some drawers but we were hardly burglars. But they threw the book at us and we got probation. Soon after me and a mate broke into some gas meters. They were in boarded up houses so I just thought it would be a shame to see the money go to waste when the houses were demolished. That's the truth and I am sticking to it. The place I was sent to was grim, grim, grim. The first time I was in class I fell foul of a psycho teacher. We were supposed to follow with our fingers as he read a book intended for 8 year olds. He read the words" Penelope sniffed the nasturtium flowers. But he didn 't know how to pronounce the words. I whispered to the thick lad next to me" thick c**t". The teacher saw me whispering and asked the lad next to me what I had said. Damn me if the lad didn't grass me up and told him exactly what I had said. From that moment on my card was marked. He used to punish me any way he could. I was only about 5ft at 13, but he would put me into a boxing ring with lads of 16 or 17 who were either waiting to be sent to borstal or just ready for release. My arms were permanently black and blue and I was often bruised. But he used to shout words of advice to me to cover his tracks. So a traumatic time with teachers who should never have been let near kids Its better now thank God. And it did me no harm. It moulded me into the angry embittered keyboard class warrior I am today. your write better stories than dickens

Like I say so simple. My mate, a joiner, came off the tools fifty odd years old with shot knees. He got a job as a lecturer/teacher in a college and lasted less than a year. Paperwork, politics, targets, you get my drift. Drives a taxi now.

Most of the MPs have never worked in a 'proper' job and were brought in a cosy middle class lifestyle. They couldnt relate to working people even if they wanted to. I don't know why the unions still contribute to the Labour Party coffers because they get nothing out of it.

To be fair on Kevin Barron he was a decent bloke at the pit and a good union man and did me a favour when i worked their it was just sad when he became an MP he just turned out like most MPs just in the job for what he could get and taking his constituants for granted knowing they would keep voting him in. jukel123 8,023
I would like to see Mick Lynch as leader of the Labour Party. I honestly think Labour would win a landslide if he were leader. There's a scenario... a general election with Farage as Tory leader and Lynch as the Labour leader.
