Lol Always been a very good club mate, was Western League when I played, but Southern Premier now, one of the sides in the league is Merthyr... there's a side from Plymouth in it ..there's some travelling in that league now! I was saying to Stiff the other day that I’m feeling more and more disconnected from premier league football and everything surrounding it. Before I moved here I was prettt regular down the local non league club (sadly just gone skint but a group of fans are trying to get it going again) and I genuinely love that local football. Top flight here has much the same feel to it as you’d get at non league there, €15 for an adult into Sligo Rovers and a tenner for my boy……and I know that money means the world to those clubs. Right on the pitch, seeing lads you have watched grow in the academy make their senior starts, it’s fantastic…..I feel much more of a connection with that type of football as a football man. Where else you going to get that entertainment for a tenner ?

Barnstaple rugby when they got promoted had serious travelling also. Think they was glad to be relegated last season! Puts serious financial pressure on a club and pressure on the players are only doing it as there hobby.
Blackmag 6,095
The money being put in non league now is nothing like years ago it's staggering the investment in some teams and a lot play in stadiums that would meet professional league standard unlike years ago Edited October 14, 2023 by Blackmag

Played against a few of the North Devon football teams mate, never played rugby.. Ilfracombe, Bideford Barnstaple and Appledore all decent sides over the years... we'd play up to Devizes, Warminster and a few Bristol sides when it was the old Western League.. but now its right up to edge of London and Wales..

There earning a few quid a game mate, think around £300 a man... we were on £20 a game and chipped in for the coach! Lol

My old and local club earlston rfc are doing excellent just now bottom of the bottom league but been 7 years since we’ve had a “team” those boys all love each other drink with each other etc like we did and of to a running start for the season ...... but id love to see them promoted same time I’d hate it because I know and experienced what happens after over confidence more travelling means more boys using cars not bus less bonding more loosing better options for the better players at other clubs that are winning that would pay our saving grace is we have the best sevens rugby tournament in the world money from that keeps us afloat and it’s still a family club I’m down every home game with my kids and half a dozen other boys and dads I played with are the same to reminisce swear and be jealous

I always thought going and playing teams way out of your own locality was the best, being the big fish in the local pond is good but you want to go and test yourself against everything out there and that’s going to mean going to strange places, with hostile fans and equally as hostile opponents……don’t get better than that for me.
