Favourite diva.

Certainly a thought provoking thread. I love listening to and watching Nina Simone. An enigma, an original but not a diva? Lady Gaga (LG) has been mentioned. At the risk of sounding pretentious (pretentious, moi?) I am not a fan of LG but love listening to Stefani Germanotta ever since listening her duets with Tony Bennett. some of the songs (caps have gone again) 2018 a star is born are superb but la vie en rose is up there with edith paif or liza minnelli.

dolores o'riordan, amy winehouse, sinead o'conner, all singers who could sing a song and touch a nerve. more poignant now that they are dead.

billie holiday, shirley bassey, siouxsie sioux, joni michell, janis joblin. too many to mention and the definition is open to interpretation but i say who is not worthy of the title... f#####g adele.

I wonder what Amy Whinehouse would've of achieved if she'd of lived, only 27 when she died and still considered one of the best... unique voice and talent for sure

Max

Sam Smith for me.

I personally could never get on with her effected “New York-ish” singing voice but I accept that the girl could sure sing.

I think someone said Alison Moyet further back in the thread and I think thats a very good shout, a very ordinary girl from Basildon opens her mouth and that comes out….fantastic.

I think peoples mind automatically gos to Americans when the word “diva” is mentioned in the context of singers but I think our home grown girls are unique and as good as any in the world.

English singers can “do” American but you won’t find an American who can do Alison Moyet or anyone like her imho

Alison’s Brother owns a homebrew shop in Westcliff I’d known him for 20+ years before I found out who is sister was lol 😄

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I always have an image of Charlie Chuck when I think of 70s/80s northerners ? Lol

Had to look him up. I remember him from Tiswas. I used to watch it on Saturday mornings. Charlie however, was not my my focus. It was a certain lady presenter who I fell in lust with. Name escapes me.

My image of a londoner falls between Tommy Steele and Chas and Dave. Wilf and gnasher but with some laughs. I'll get my insulated coat.

I forgot about Eastenders . Got to be the most depressing, ball ache of all time. Coronation Street depicts people as either comical or retarded. Eastenders depicts characters as either psychotic, manic depressive or complete c7nts.

Script writers need to level up. I will write to Mr Bean, sorry Mr Gove, the levelling up secretary, and tell him to jazz up both soaps to better reflect reality.

I was actually mates with Jimmy Nail, (Jimmy Bradford), when we were much younger. We swapped Lambrettas  for a while when we were mods.

He had a habit of mentioning people in his shows and films and mentioned my parents a few times.

He was bigger pals with my brother in law , Tony Fleck, and mentions him and my other pal, Chad Shephard, a lot in his book.

Cheers.

Wow. That brought a smile to my face. I met loads of guys like Oz, likeable, great mates, but not big on family responsibility. I've read his autobiography, (the actor, not the character)...great read.

What ever happened to Jimmy Nail for him to go all skinny the way he did was he ill or did he do it on purpose do you know ?.....the first couple of series of Auf Wiedersehn Pet were brilliant i loved them but them few series they did years later when Oz was all slim and intelligent were absolutely awful.
