eastcoast 4,163
An extreme metaphorical political statement? Another bit of old England that took hundreds of years to grow destroyed in the blink of an eye. Or pure vandalism by people who have no love for this land? Probably just an apprentice who was on his phone during the pre-start meeting that day and HR will blame his supervisor if you try and sack him.

Except this one tree grew in a picturesque location and has a claim to fame in that it had a non-speaking role in a film about a probably fictional British person who was portrayed by an American . The fuss does seem a wee bit contrived. It's a shame for those who claim an emotional or artistic link to the tree but seen in a cold light you are right Qbgrey .Not a big crime. If the rumours about it being the work of disgruntled employee or farmer are true then it was a pretty neat bit of revenge . Nobody harmed and at worse a minor criminal damage charge to face . And a fantastic way of turning every scrap of that tree into an earner for the NT . Just how much would a bit of furniture made from the Robin Hood Tree fetch in the moneyed circles of Hollywood? What would the trunk fetch at auction? Even the bits that would normally be logged or wood chipped have suddenly become far more commercial propositions. How many pressed leaves or seed keys in presentation packs or tiny bits of treen could the souvenir counters shift? Watch this space for glossy pamphlets or even a book of its life. Now I'm not suggesting the National Trust were behind it Of course not. But they had a motive ! Seriously ,the NT should be able to find a way of using the timber positively

eastcoast 4,163
Who's land is it on? Simple question but I found out years ago that every square inch of England above the high tide mark is owned by someone and you cannot do anything anywhere in England without the permission of the person or persons who own that land. Who owns the land and did they give their permission to fell the tree? If there was a badger sett below the tree and someone's terrier had got to ground... the executioner would already be sharpening his (or her) axe.

Walked around a bit , went to Camden ( not bad , few bellends about , good pizza , nice coffee , bought some trainers ) then up into Leicester square ( busy , contemplated booking a show for the wife and me , remembered we’d had a a Barney so bought sone Lego and m and ms , got my phone screen replaced ) next stop China town ( very well er Chinese but suppose , contemplated bringing the wife , remembered we’d had a Barney , rang sone f***ing idiot , had a coke , not bad prices ) but walked back down past trafalgar square, downing street , horseguards, cenotaph etc . Stopped in the guards div memorial . Looked at the statue of the fallen lads from the five regts , the grenadier , the Welsh , the Scot’s , the Irish , the Coldstream. All alike but slightly different . Stone faced hewn , lean , no give , all staring solemnly out at the crowds of tourists , honestly two wildly in your face type trans things sashayed past . My mate looked at me and said “ look what happened to our country , I wonder what they think “ as we meandered down to our coaches opposite Waterloo station and sat waiting on the late comers , I scrolled this story on my notifications . I’ve stood there , with dogs long gone , girlfriends long forgotten , mates long time no see and family , no longer here. I’ve been there twice and witnessed strangers scattering ashes at the area around that tree . It’s a focal point , one of the true north England landmarks , most people truth be told think little more of it that the rhpot tree and half those bemoaning it’s culling will have never been there . But for some , it’s as part of home as coming over the moors , or give peas a chance . It’s not a structure that can be replaced or remodelled . It’s imbued into you . Sat in the coach as we left London , past the Thames , along the water , part the remodelled factories , the high rises , the expensive concrete high rises of offices long dark and homes lamp lit and thought about what home means . maybe morose or maybe seeking a pattern where there is none , rationalising rather than rational . But If ever there was a sobering allude to what we are doing to our country and our society today . The wanton removal of a tree that sat alone in a hillock for no reason other than spite illustrates this more than anything else I’ve read in a long time . a real shame . I actually kind of shrugged this of until I read this mate thank you! Not similar but similar all the same the ripped up a local rugby pitch Melrose home of rugby sevens god know how many years or how many young men have ran out on that pitch and it’s meant something ripped it up put on 4g due to some semi professional rugby franchise bullshit from the SRU could get this wrong on who they have to pay but it’s either the local council or the Scottish government they Melrose rugby club have to pay £80 an hour to train or play on that pitch until X amount is paid back in all fairness the other side of coin is it can be trained and played on all year round and the football club minors to adults now get access but still pretty big move many people had there ashes spread on that pitch with permission and many more with out it know this subject will be close to @jok
