Previously, the only time you saw the word 'lurcher' was in the now defunct Exchange and Mart which was a weekly magazine where you could buy all, sorts. A bit like an offline Ebay. I guess he set Hancock up in business and despite producing some duffers, he also produced some cracking dogs. Those who knew him reckon he was a wrong un, or partly a wrong un, but he did introduce a lot of folk into the sport because of his writings. I believe his terriers delivered what they said on the tin. I hear this a lot that he brought people to the working dog world, but could never work out what the benifits were, 1000's of lunatics bringing bad exposure to a relatively unheard of sport is about all I can think of

I know when I bred the two dogs in my profile picture in 84 both of them a mix of beddy grey x collie grey with a touch of deerhound down the line a couple of lads who had booked a pup chose to go to Hancock instead as they had been took in by Plummers sales pitch. The terriers I am on about were rough haired mongrelly types he had brought from Wales though by all accounts very good earth dogs. Yeah, you're right. Collie crosses are OK for those who can gel with them, but not all of us can or want to. I remember him saying saluki blood should never be brought into bitzas. Can't remember why. He considered himself an authority on lurchers, which is questionable. There are genuine authorities out there... Old Phil and Skycat and a lot of lads who aren't on the Internet. But, as I say he entertained and got a lot of folk interested.

Think he had to eat his words when someone sent him a vid of lucky the dark destroyer and Nuttals Foxy about bitzas with saluki in the mix. Lol 1

He opened up a world of storytellers, book writers and posers. Ive read a lot of his books, and derived entertainment from them, in the same way I would from watching the office. He was a great influence on a lot of young lads in starting out, but he didnt encourage he just made most feel inferior because they could never achieve the kind of feats he spoke of as normal. A lot of lads were frustrated that their little Collie lurchers were not smashing Foxs every week like Merle!! What a joke!! A dynasty!! Grandiose, deluded, like a lot of school teachers.

Agree, he did often talk down to his readers. I can remember feeling uneasy about some of his opinions which came from his social class and not mine. I can remember one article in which he spoke down about people who had tattoes. He stated he would never employ anybody with a tattoo. And that was for a kennel assistant..a shit shoveller. I don't have any tattoes but people can do what they want and shouldn't be denied a job because of someone's bias.

I thought perhaps he was a physics teacher or something and got the title from that.
