gnasher16 30,025
Must admit ive always felt the whole " protection dog " thing more often than not is just a bit of an ego stroking " ive got a mean nasty dog " ....lets face it outside security work how many people apart from maybe street dealers or street kids in general would really warrant a dog " protecting " them ?.......even the scenario the chap above talks about with a yard of plant stuff if someone really really wants it flesh and bone just isnt going to stop them......i agree with what someone else said a little yappy dog and a good security system ie noise and tech will deter all but the most determined thief. Came through the rear back door kicked it in, took jewellery, telly , video player. They didn't hang about. Cops= detective, said norm they gone 7 mins, prob sell stuff for drugs. I did ask him, if guard type dog rottie, gsd,, etc would it have stopped them. He said if you want big dog like that in your house maybe, but a jack Russell terrier would be just as good, would let you know quicker, small and easy to keep. Plus alarm do the trick But a thief would poss go to house no dog be easier for them, or if they really wanted your house they kill your dog, poison, or shoot it. At the time had lurcher x lurcher bitch, outnin a kennel, but she never barked. None of my lurchers never barked, they bred to hunt silent, as most lurchers bdo anyway. So that was from a copper, get alarm , and yappy terrier, next time, got the alarm, but still keep quite lurchers, Bryn and Buck never barked , little woody the jack x does a bit, but anyway got fook all to pinch now skint, me son, and grandkids, make sure of that. I agree with you in part I have never felt the need to have a protection dog. The dog I described in an earlier post owned by the well known dog man's brother was down to the fact in the 80s and early 90s Gamekeepers in the same area were taking liberty's by dropping on dog lad's when they were on their own and giving them a kicking usually 3 to one even shooting at folk innocently walking their dogs and even shot someone and left him for dead wile he was lamping rabbits on his own. I believe the dog was more a deterrent than anything else. Not to mention two gamekeepers beat an old poacher up who was in his late 70s though one of them had to leave the area shortly after. A lad I know well got his house done over one Sunday morning when they were at mass, cleaned the house and took his Jack Russell as well, he was more annoyed about the dog than anything else. Dirty fuckers.....only going on what ive been told but your average house breaker or creeper will hear a noisy dog and think twice, but combined with complicated technology will see them move on to something easier 9 times out of 10.
Chaff 3,574
Mate had sign on gate saying never mind the dog beware of the owner lol But you did need to watch out for dog, if you weren't well acquainted. That was a young less than 2 yrs English bull, had it pts after incident His own fault imo came back from food shop dog wasn't crated dog was bouncing around jumping up and down all excited and caught his 8yr old face and ripped her cheek down with his dodgy railings which were shark like all angles probably caused by shite breeding. Don't think dog was to blame more him as an owner, but the dog paid the ultimate price. Tricky one but I don't think I could live with a dog that scared my daughter for life, whether intentional or not. Shame

Tbh Ive never really got the whole protection dog thing unless you're doing security or doing some kind of competetive sport as if I thought I really needed protecting from someone that scary I wouldnt want to relying on a dog. Some people might find that weird as I own a bandog and I've done some aspects of what you could call protection training. But I only took certain aspects that I felt neccesary to build a well rounded confident dog which would guard my place and keep my spaniels safe as spaniels were disappearing left right and centre at the time.Contary to what a lot of people believe just buying a guardian breed doesnt automatically mean you'll end up with a good guard dog without some conditiong and confidence building in certain scenario's.I also spent a hell of a lot more time making sure she was well socialised,100%obedience,100%with any animal I told her was not on the menu.Thats where so many idiots go wrong. They wanna do all the biting stuff but dont wanna put in all the other hard work and time that should go with it.
