We then had a return match over 270 yards at a greyhound track. The whippet led to the bend then was overtaken by the greyhound that won by a couple of yards . Over 200 yards straight it would be close, but experience tells me I would favour the greyhound. Now I know you’re going to come back with “ the non-ped would have greyhound in it” and you would be correct, but this was a 21” 35lb non-ped whippet, against a full size racing greyhound. No way would I match a pedigree whippet with a greyhound over any distance . Cheers. Quote Link to post

Expand The thing your missing is, whippets were never bred to run any distance but to be as fast as possible from a standing start. I have seen a pedigree whippet leave very fast dogs standing when chasing bolted rabbits across pasture land, over short distances. but as you say they would never win over a longer distance. I believe its called "Horses for Courses" Quote Link to post
Chaff 3,622
When breeding a beddy or bull to a whippet then bred out just using whippets so that looks wise it's a whippet do any beddy or bull traits remain, as in better stamina endurance etc ? Quote Link to post

I believe its called "Horses for Courses" Expand I’m not missing anything ! Ive always said whippets have been bred for sprinting, racing in a straight line over relatively short distances. For the last, possibly , 100 years the best have been bred to the best to achieve the fastest dogs on earth, in my mind, over 150 yards. Of course I’m talking about non-peds here; pedigree whippets for many years fell into three categories; show, race and course, whereas the non-ped was bread almost exclusively to race. I’ve used both ped and non-ped for working and would do so again if it wasn’t for the fact my main enjoyment is running quarry that isn’t really suitable for whippets, of either type. Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post

Expand Like any cross it will be a lottery as far as the pups go, some will through one way and some will through another, Obviously the more whippet you add the more the litter will through towards that but that would be defeating the object of the out cross in the first place, Only my opinion. Expand I have little knowledge on the non ped whippets used to race other than those at the local flapping track when i was young and most of them contained greyhound to some percentage or other, which to me appeared to be a bit of a con really, but as i grew older i understood that the need to win and be better than the next man was the reason, Joking aside i do have a soft spot for a well bred whippet and if i was looking for another dog then that's the route i would go down. I have seen a couple of bitches that came out of litters that had a percentage of whippet in them that have been unbelievable on the stuff you like, but the strange thing is both have been of the small whippety type that gets thrown now and again. Admittedly both had short working lives but one bitch did 32 on 32 consecutive days and was found dead along with her quarry on the 33rd no more than 6ft apart. I had the litter brother to her and he never got near one in the whole of his working life Lol Quote Link to post

Expand Could it be that that 1/8th could land in the tail in one pup then the heart of another but physically the litter all look the same. But the pup with the 1/8th thrown to the heart out performs its siblings in the field. Or am I going the wrong way ? Quote Link to post
