Supposed to be a working whippet, but I’ve no idea how good it was on hares; Whippet - The Breed Archive WHIPPET.BREEDARCHIVE.COM Black Lance x Gillscar Soft Whisper, United Kingdom 1991 Cheers. Sooty Sam was bred by a Mr Croft-Slater, by his dog Black Lance (who had mainly Laguna behind him) out of a bitch Gillscar Softwhisper (Martinsell, Laguna with Shalfleet, Nimrodel and more Laguna behind that. Originally the Laguna kennels were primarily a racing kennel. That aside coursing whippets and coursing greyhounds are two very different animals. Whippets as you know are very quick off the mark and are also quick to get a turn or two in in, But all that saps energy and long courses are a rarity, That said quite a few took the hare with that first few turns. The stuff he was Bred from were Laguna lines. Bond- Gunning and Colonel Walsh ran the coursing club, If i remember correctly. Quote Link to post

I think it was Walsh who wasn’t too keen on whippets coursing, and once said something along the lines “a whippet coursing meet is usually decided with a bye , a run up and a gone away” ! He thought rabbits were a whippets natural quarry, and were mismatched against hares. Thats not to say whippets CAN’T take hares; they can, I’ve had a fair few with whippets myself. Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post

The bitch i had was only ever really used as a ferreting dog,I had a Bedlington whippet greyhound that took the other stuff if i needed to. although she did occasionally take other stuff, But back then i was ferreting 5 or more days a week, She was an exceptional ferreting dog, she is the only dog i have ever owned that would crown a ferret on a kill. i once watched her chase a rabbit into a deer fence and go through it sideways at full tilt. real heart in mouth stuff, But as i have said before, it took its toll on her and she ended up being retired with spinal problems. Chaff 3,621
I don't think they were ever going to be hare dogs, but seemed they were punching above their weight as far as ability goes if I'm getting it right . Quote Link to post

She was a grand little dog that did the job i wanted at that time and did it extremely well i must say. Its funny but after all these years and the dogs that have come and gone, If i was going to get another running dog, Then it would be another whippet. That's if i could find the breeding and working ability i was looking for, Funny old world Lol Quote Link to post

Hardest thing in the world to protect them from them selves when years of good breeding behind them. Well I'm getting a pup from that neck of country and may well have that line of Laguna in her. chartpolski 23,670
I started with whippets, then had most types of running dogs and seen and worked a lot of different types around the world, but still suspect my last running dog may be a whippet, come the full circle ! Cheers. 1 Quote Link to post
