Pipe Bender -- Help PLEASE!!!

Recommended Posts

I need someone near Reading who has a decent Pipe bender and knows how to use it please.

My boat has had a coming together, and a couple of stanchions and the handrail are bent!!  This is gentle work, there is nothing dramatic to do here, but I don't have a Pipe bender and I don't have any experience using one.

The way I see it, 2 tall stanchions and the hand rail need a tweak, the small stanchion visible in the 3rd picture is only leaning in because of the bends to the tall stanchions and handrail further forward!  It is Stainless steel (so quite hard) and best I can measure seems about 26mm diameter.

The boat is near Sonning (Near Reading) on the Thames.

I'm happy to pay for someone's expertise, or offer a day out on the boat in exchange.

Can you help please?  Please PM or reply here!!

Thank you.

Firstly that’s a yoghurt pot not a boat, only joking but thems the rules, but if your stuck just fill the pipe with hot sand warm the outside with a lamp and bend away the sand will stop the pipe kinking, I,ll pass on  free day out thanks bit of a busmans holiday 👍

There is no access to the pipework, they are sealed all round to prevent any water ingress.

Can't just yank them either because of GRP anchorage.

Needs a decent pipe bender and direct access to stainless only!

PS and its what us southerners call a Gin Palace, very civilised at Henley don't you know!!!!

Gin palace yogurt pot just depends if there talking to you or about you, but in all seriousness that stainless must lift off either from a grub screw in the base or a bolt underneath have a watch on here may have to remove a bit o internal trim to gain access but as the boat was made in a mould the fixtures and fittings are definitely added after so are removable sorry I,m a bit far or I’d pop across

The 3 at the rear have nut/bolt underneath, accesses through deck locker, awkward but can be done, the rest have some sort of stainless rivets, and no use unscrewing the rear as nothing will come off until rivets drilled.  Then again, I don't have any rivets or rivet machine.  Any access from inside for any others is a nightmare, I've looked!!!

Pipe bender seems best option.

Really nice part of the Thames there at Sonning. Glen Hoddle, Theresa May live there and George Clooney has a place there too. We walked it from there down into Reading a few years back. Nice boat you've got there anyway and i hope you get a bender sorted soon!!

Sorry to Waffle on, but if these are the rivets you refer to I would drill them all out and replace with small grub screws as this will be an ongoing thing surprised it wasn’t done from new really anyway I,ll leave you alone with your bender now

No need to come out if I can find someone with a pipe bender.  Would have to be some sort of stainless grub screw, and holes are fully drilled through as a rivet is in there, so issues with a grub screw anyway!!

If you use a bender that's been used on mild steel it could contaminate the stainless causing rust issues

Thanks for that, but happy to take my chances!

@Borr is the man you need👍

Not worked on boats , if it's inch process pipe polished then you'll struggle with a bender, I'd say remove and straighten with a rubber dead blow hammer on wood . Can drill out rivets and replace easy enough few quid in Screwfix .
