Pig nuts in 25kg sacks roughly 55lb so say 10 sacks feed. I pay £12.50 a sack so £125 feed per pig to get at 2m and cull at the end of the 6th month. Put the word out local and with a bit of time there is plenty of 'free' food. The butcher I use do a sausage box of 24 sausages (same type as mine) for £20. We got 450 sausages so we got £375 worth of sausages. For the chops, I reckon they would be £6 each easily at butcher, probably more, but say £10 for 2. We had 52 chops so £260. The joints would be £15-25 on size. We got 32. Worked on £15 is £480 Got a pig and a half to bacon joints, probably 12kilo conservative guesstimate. If said £10 / kilo be £120. 375 + 260 + 480 + 120 = £1,235 For a spend of £840.90 I think I have under estimated the mest value there and over estimated the feed bought aswell. That said I only run the maths to check it was viable, the main point was about quality of meat and knowing where our food comes from. I have about an acre of grass I could put sheep on down at the pond but a farmer friend warned me off them, said they are a nightmare. Next door neighbour does cattle and is on about taking one in to butcher so got my name on some beef. To be honest I have thought about various ruminants cows, sheep, goats etc but figured if I can just source them locally it will save me the hassle. With them just grazing I wouldn't be doing anything different to other locals. With the chicken and pork that are fed you never know what your getting or what's gone into them unless you DIY. I did register for goats on my CPH because I fancied them for dairy and meat but its more of a full time commitment. Seems sensible option in your circumstances mate at least most of the food is basically getting reared on your door step and with out the other added head aches. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
