Ive done a few posts on here over the years but this post is guna split the room more than any other......

I have a pond that I lease, about 2-2.5 acre. When I took it on I was told there was nothing in it so I put 300 little carp in, C1s, which means first summer, so they were basically 2-3inches long.

It turned out that there was some originals in the pond....which if I had known I wouldn't have stocked anything to start!

Couple yrs on and the 2-3inch carp are now 3-4lb but getting lean as it is over stocked. 

I've made the descision to 'get rid' of some. Gifting to friends, some may possibly find there way into a few local farm ponds, canal etc. 

Today I thought I would do as the Romans did.........

I understand why they had them in ponds and moats now. Imagine having a food source that was low to no maintenance, grew quick, bred loads and didn't run off like a rabbit right outside front door.

The fish itself was lovely tasting, but boney, which puts me off personally.

But I totally understand why they are bred for meat.

It's a little controversial, and me being an angler it felt wierd as we don't do that over here....but maybe we should?

I've seen carp for sale at fish market always thought it's a waste as fish myself , but will take trout to eat , I think with carp we see as a fish to catch an put back not for the pot , you planning to eat more carp with rearing an growing your own food pal

To the Poles it’s the equivalent to our turkeys at Christmas I’d give it a go.

Edited to say another business opportunity there flogging Carp to our Eastern European friends.

I'm not sure to be honest. The fish iteslf was actually really nice but it still doesn't feel right. I need to have a word with myself and see. 

I've been brought up fishing from being a kid and taught that all fish need to be handled with love and care unless they are trout or from saltwater, they go int pot......mad really isn't it. What's difference between a carp and owt else other than perception?

But I also know I have 200-300 carp at 3-4lb at my finger tips so thats a ridiculous amount of food if I can get my head around it as part of the whole thing we are doing!

I live at doncaster and we have quite a big market still, and a large fish market, there have been carp on there for years now. I remember being shocked by it first time I saw it and must be 10yrs+ that. 

It's normal to so many societies in the world, just not us

First of all carp anglers and airgunners are classified for me as one of the same ZZZZZzzzzzz

 

fill yer belly mate end of the day it's just another form of farming/game management ain't as if your just going to your pond and wiping them all out for the sake of it your putting them to good use what makes the carp mightier than the trout or salmon ?

Soon be time for the girls to go. 21wks now. As much as I like having em about I'm ready for a freezer full of joints and sausages!!!

It’s good eating but better when purged. Can have a bit of a muddy taste. My Polish mates parents used to stick them in the bath for a few days before Christmas. I was over there a few years ago and it was really really good. They told me that the carp are now purged on a commercial scale before going on sale in the shops.

You just need to give your brain time to adjust . You just don't see them as food yet .

Years ago , I started eating squirrels.  I'd always seen them as rats , and never even considered them food.  Once I'd eaten a few ( the first couple were a struggle), my brain accepted that my taste buds were telling the truth , and squirrels tasted great .

Peruvians eat Guinea pigs perfectly normal some countries eat dogs like you say it’s adjusting your mind set, most people would eat anything if they were hungry enough.
