ryaldinhio 4,502
My workings from last time You feed 1lb a day for every month of age up to 6m/6lb. Got the pigs at 2m so roughly.... 3rd month 3lb day = 90lb 4th month 4lb day = 120lb 5th month 5lb day =150lb 6th month 6lb day = 180lb So 540lb feed. Pig nuts in 25kg sacks roughly 55lb so say 10 sacks feed. I pay £12.50 a sack so £125 feed per pig to get at 2m and cull at the end of the 6th month. I had 2 pigs: £100 for the weaners £250 in feed £186.50 slaughter and butcher (that included £70 for sausages) Total £536.50 I didn't actually spend this much because I didn't only feed nuts, we supplemented with fruit/veg etc. Surprising how many people have fruit trees that just goes to waste! Put the word out local and with a bit of time there is plenty of 'free' food. I think we spent about £450 in total last time for the 2 pigs. Half a pig at my butcher is £200 so would be £800 but not comparable because that £800 doesn't included butchery, sausages, or as good quality meat. That said I only did the maths to check it was viable, the main point was about quality of meat and knowing where out food comes from. The fact it worked out financially was just a bonus. 8

Last time I traded half a pig for a full lamb, I wouldn't do it again. A lot more meat in half a pig. I'm considering getting a couple lambs myself to fatten up. 1
