ryaldinhio 4,642
Got the electric fence up today. They been freaking out with it, getting a belt then running to other side getting another belt. Bit concerned to be honest but not much can be done about it. Hopefully they will figure out its the fence and stay away. After first couple belts they went sulking in their shelter. 2

Why you got electric up, as you have post and wire ?…you thinking of moving them and getting them used to electric fence ?….

Been advised by a few to go with electric and also the ground is a bit up and down and they already been pushing at the bottom barbed wire and fence in places. I have a decent size pond aswell so last thing I needed was them getting out while I'm at work and drowning in pond! It's my first time with pigs so just trying to be belt and braces I guess.

Don’t be concerned, a pigs skin is like boot leather and they are really smart animals mate….they will learn in no time and you will have a much easier life. Its kinder too, try untangling a fully grown pig out of sheep wire when they have decided to just push through it !…..I have, it’s not fun ! Once they are used to electric fence they won’t even step over the line if it’s laid on the ground….better for them, better for you
ryaldinhio 4,642
Given the 'threat to life' storm warnings for tomorrow I decided best to get some reinforcement on the chicken run. Put pvc coated steel all round band over the top of the poly sheet roof....hopefully will be enough to hold it down in the gales! The two pigs are fully aware of the electric fence now as you boys expected. The chickens and turkeys in the run are coming on well and my 2 red bourbon chicks are aswell...might end up keeping these if I have a cock and hen. 12 more eggs in the incubator, been assured they are light sussex large fowl but I'm not convinced, look too small and too dark but will find out with time. 1

ryaldinhio 4,642
Also picked these up, £15 for the three. I'm not sure where I want my final composting set up so these will be ideal coz I can lift and shift if needed.

I read up on this and its a bit split but generally if you keep them together long term there is a chance they can have issues, something to do with a bacteria the chickens have that turkeys have issues with. Then there is loads of people who say they keep them together all time with no issues. As I'm only keeping the turkeys till Xmas I figured I would give it a go and learn on the job.
