First dog that was yours fully and a story behind it

we always had whippets and when I was 14/15 it was agreed I could own my first dog i read every lurcher book I could find and settled on a collie greyhound I think I filled my dad in on all the bad points of Salukis and bull crosses that you’d read then I got him to take me down to bishop Auckland and I bought a 3/4 saluki 1/4 greyhound bitch for 200 with 20 back luck money and i told him it was a Wheaton greyhound collie greyhound lol god knows why but he never ever pulled me up even when I boasted how obedient and and loyal my nearly pure saluki was some bitch taught me everything I know about dogs and also learnt in later years how much I abused her keenness and took her for granted

I came to hear about this lurcher pup that was being given away as her owners couldn't manage her. I grew up with working Lurchers and was the perfect owner for her.

Me and her camped and hunted together, till a mate moved us in with him, then I started my nurse training but we still went out mooching every day and she was my heart and soul dog. I had her until she ran hard into a fence post at 9 years old and I had to PTS. That was 11 years ago and i still miss her and she's still the top dog I've ever had

? Yeah, I get it, my dad tried to get me more involved with our working dogs as a kid but like you I got bored fast.

You made me laugh with that bit about the rain because last night we had one of the loudest storms with some of the most torrential rain I've seen in years, and I was out in it with the Saluki pup, I want her to be ok with rain and unphased by thunder, and she did brilliantly

They only run around the corner until you come into view, then they run round the next corner until you come into view and on and on until running into the middle of the main drag before a total stranger stops their car is greeted with a wagging tail, and gives you your saluki saturated charge back

I have known lads be at there wits end with a saluki type pup ,returning 2 hand at a meer whistle even retrieving quarry ,but with a bit of patience and perseverance eventually the penny dropped and they were off ,and never come back

My 1st "lurcher" was a 1st cross collie whippet, that threw to the collie, it taught me that a dog needs the speed to catch 1st and foremost.................. a great knock about for a lad and made me think outside the box and use field craft to get a catch but not an ideal 1st dog.

My 1st decent lurcher was a beddy\grey X collie /grey, great little dog, took a lot of game with minimal lay ups. Best £35 I've ever spent.
