They give me the creeps mate, I’ve not myself heard of anyone been bitten by one but I reckon there’ll be a lot more than we think or here about..

Seen a video of a very large female adder scaling a dry stone wall in the Lake District, must’ve been a good 4ft long and plenty girth too - I’d be heading in the opposite direction if I’d have been there.

Think it’s people’s reaction to them and not the bite itself that’s bad, it’s a bit like being stung by a bee, some take it as nothing and some react badly leading to  anifiltac ??? shock an hospital have been struck at a few times but never a good hit, I actually think grass snakes are a more impressive snake myself, ( but I’m a water person) I have an old hi8 video somewhere of one I caught years ago it’s going full cobra on me in a bucket head right up and striking like it meant real business, have also been on the wrong end of that stinking fluid they squirt out as well which is not nice

I can't see why so many of you are so negative about them. They're amazing creatures. We get a few black adders near me too. On one occasion, when my son and I were out looking for them, we found an adder and a grass-snake under the same piece of corrugated iron and we've seen them with slow-worms too.

A few years ago I saw a baby one (not sure what you call baby adders: adderlets? adderlings?). It was so small I took a photo of it with my foot alongside to prove how small it was. Beautiful creatures. Always brightens my day seeing one.
