Wolfdog91 6,929
So just wanted to give a little update. So still playing around with this mold and finding out 800° , poring very close to the spout and a slight rearward tilted to the mold while filling seems to cast the best bullets. Would probably help if I was using something other then this random WW mix alloy I've cast and remelted idk how many times at this point lol but hay Anyhow took a few minutes and casted up a hand full the other night and ended up with like 30 in a few minutes and kept half of those after inspection. Gas checked them with Hornady checks sized/ crimped the checks with the NOE system down to .225. gave them a little acetone bath and let them dry before power coating with some Carolina blue from smoke over on cast boolits. Whole process from checking to putting them in the oven was probably 10-15min tops, most of which honestly was just me inspecting the bullets. Now on the subject of standing vs not. Honestly my first bunch of Lee 55gr I cast I didn't stand and I'm still shooting those. Probably have over 400 of those still but egh... I mean their decent for plinking but standing seems to be what you want to do for actual accuracy. So... Also will add I'm trying Gas checking before PC for the first time and I think I prefer it. So 15min in the toaster oven Aannnd boom. Pretty Will say though I still haven't mastered PC yet..lot of the really good guys will have these looking glossy and FLAWLESS but I'm just not there yet. Some of it is skill , some is prep work other is equipment. Next investment will be a little. convection oven. The moving air is supposed to work much better then a standard toaster oven . Anyhow too these back in rand them though the .225 sizer again just to uniform them and boom So honestly I don't really have any of the good "classic" powders you'd use for cast bullets on hand. 12.0-18.0GR of accurate 2015 has been my poison for a while now when it comes to messing with cast in .223. actually can't quite remember where I got it from.... Think it was a Elvis ammo video dealing with shooing cast .223 in AR's anyhow I've been using it with no real problems besides unburnt powder but again, it's not really ment for this. Will be ordering some actual cast powders soon though. Anyhow just made up some quick loads to test real quick. Was really hot and the horse flys where out so decided to shoot a quick group at 50yd real quick just to see what would happen . Ran a box out to my little berm in the yard I use for my rim fire propped up in the door and So a hair over 1" @50yd from my little ultra Varmint. Didn't set up the Chrono because it been acting stupid and just didn't feel like dealing with it . Last load I used this charge with was a 55gr cast bullets and it was going 1400fps if remember correctly so guessing this was a little lower. So a bit later that evening it cooled down enough I decided to try out at 100yd really quick.Nothing special or award winning just my little podunk set up. And I have to say I much have been sipping on the retard juice because I just couldn't seem to adjust my sights lol. After the 4th sighter I said screw it I only have 4 left I need to shoot a group and well, pleasantly surprised :) Quote Link to post
