I'm interested in other breeds but the fertility problems like labs. Why not get nice mid size lurcher, there plenty in the rescues, if don't want young pup, that's where I might go if ever get another lurcher after Buck gone. Quote Link to post

Have you thought of an Irish Terrier? good family dogs, good guard dog and still kill vermin but not a pain or as highly driven as the working terriers. I've always been interested in one as a general family and farm dog but they are very pricey over here. 1 Quote Link to post
jeemes 4,498
I know for many years statistically the Labrador was the mostly like breed to bite you in the street. 1 Quote Link to post

Not in gundog situations but pet owner dog walker's animals. I don't think it is because of working bred animals not getting the stimulation/exercise/socialisation but more to blood/breeding. Most pet or show bred dogs are very distant from the working bred stock. Thankfully, for me anyway, I have seen a move away from labs to the various poodlexgundog types. Most are charming people and dog friendly little things. The only dog aggressive 1 that I have/did encounter in recent months was a standard poodle x black lab. You should of met the small 3/4 poodle 1/4 lab I had , it came from a licensed welsh kennel that bred that type most were selling fur over a grand back 10 years ago , it had slightly undershot jaw and the owners was closing the business .so the dog was reduced in price . The dog had no encouragement from me but would regularly raise its lip and give a growl to door knockers and various people met whilst walking . It was very protective of me . when I grew up in Dorset in 70-80s it was collies and jack Russell’s that was most common to nip you .labs were very calm . Quote Link to post

If I get a lurcher Ray I'd be back to moping around with nothing to run and worrying about getting plastered all over the local facebook pages. Not worth the mider locally. 1 Quote Link to post

But i did like the Irish terrier , i did see one x back to whippet in the 80s cracking little dog , fast good coat, very loyal good guard dog, with dogs ok, but the bloke put lot of time in to it, but he did say in pure form they could be a handful with other dogs , tough little dogs. How about a Airedale , now these are more easy than the Irish with dogs, no prob with coat if in the house , and very good guard dogs, but i did like that Irish x whippet 2 Quote Link to post

Last were half brother sister drakeshead, nothing alike in build but graft all day. Little bitch smash through cover, the dog seemed one of the best dogs on the shoot few times I went beating. We had the dog in its retirement soon started hunting up rabbits, retrieving myxi. Lovely temperament big rough thing massive feet showed his teeth when happy. We lost him down marsh turned up few days later bag of bones other side of mersey. Remember coming home from school made up when we got him back. Looked unrecognisable other than scar on his foot and his snarling smile wagging his take too tired sit up! Randomly…chatting to girl at barbers cutting my hair it was her mum who found him on the banks. 3 Quote Link to post

terryd 8,636
I think Ray if that sort of thing happened in his first two years you would had different dog on your hands. But now he knows the score and will be good. Quote Link to post
