I’d say he’d be right on both counts, how many lurchers do you see with bad recall, or that aren’t broken to livestock. On the fitness side it’s much the same most dogs just taken out in august on hard ground with no fitness work & owners can’t understand why they’re getting injuries

I wasn’t sure what he meant by “training”, but I see your point. 
To be fair, I probably put more emphasis on fitness training than obedience training.

Youre right with your examples; recall and stock breaking are absolute necessities, retrieve is also an advantage, but for the kind of work my dogs do, it’s not a big disadvantage if they don’t retrieve.

Ive never seen the point in training a running dog to FTCh standard, even though I have used lurchers for beating on shoots in the past.

I used my lurchers for everything, lamping, ferreting, working very dense cover, rough shooting, pigeon shooting, beating, duck flighting even picking up on shoots and yes i did expect them to retrieve to hand and be easy to handle in any situation. 

They didn't need to be FTCh level but i did expect them to be able to do the job.  But its horses for courses as they say.

I’m the same, I don’t require a retrieve from my dogs. All I ask is a basic level of obedience, good recall, good with stock, jump on command. When I comes to fitness though I always make sure my dogs are right where I want them to be before I give them a run, being well prepared can save you a lot of lay offs

I think that quite a few owners just own land sharks stick gps on them take them to likley spots  and then a good dog or bad dog opinion is formed.

 I have met with a few such owners, obviously not the type that can type.

Unlike all the good responsible owners here on THL

As it happens, I was at my nephews last Saturday to watch the football, and the conversation turned to boxing.

My nephew thinks Fury is the greatest boxer of all time !

Looks like another one I’ve got to educate !

What a sad indictment of the British education system this younger generation are !
