Yeah, I used to catch them as a kid on the Paramatta river in Sydney, it was badly polluted in those days but the eels thrived. I never weighed them but they were big and would release them. It turned me off eating them until a mate gave me some from a clean river, smoked. He reckons because they are oily they smoke up good, same as mullet.

I’ve had a fair few on same canal just below Stourton south Leeds I always seem to get them just below the lockgates

As far as I know, you can no longer fish for them in Ireland

They are not in the numbers on my local river that they used to be. Good few years back I could nip out the back and catch a few bootlaces in minutes if I was short on ferret food.
