Hob&Jill 258
Couldnt collect them today either I will set them higher next time. They are set on a weir and tied on right by the normal water level, my mistake. I normally leave them 3 days or so until I check them. Quote Link to post
Guest dotty
crayfish are best caught in the summer. in the winter they hiberate and you will only catch the ones with the trap right out side there front door. crayfish are a bit like underwater rabbits. they tend to have sets of holes on the river or lake banks. the best bait is fish. others like dog and cat food work but is not nearly as affective. i found that the best spots are in protected areas, such as a small cove or under over hanging branches etc... traps off of ebay are good. the netted ones that look like lobster pots i find very good although there do break quite alot. in most traps 70% of the ones that get in get out again. these traps are quite big and very few get out and only really get out if there are to many in the trap. in the netted ones i've had over 150 in one trap. also alot of people say check them every couple of days. this only gives them more time to escape. once a day is best and preferably in the morninbg due to crayfish being nockternal hope this helps. good luck Quote Link to post
roystoncrankted 1
I shoot in North Yorkshire on a small pheasant shoot and this year we have had a little side bet going during the pheasant season, 4 of us have had crayfish traps of varying designs in the local river. Now we have had some really good catches but with the floods latley we have lost a few traps but the best one we have had is as follows - Sat afternoon is normally when we check traps after shoot so we goes up on said sat afternoon which I might add was following quite a bad flood so we had not been able to find our traps all week, so off we pops and get's to the river I cant find my trap anywhere 1 other trap missing asumed washed down stream never to be set eyes on again trap no. 3 was found were left tied with sturdy rope to tree, trap 4 was also not were it was left. we searched around for a while and finally set of up the river banking only to be met by said trap no.4 hanging in a tree 8ft up in the air now that was lucky you may say best part was the bloody thing had 36 crayfish inside it. Oh and we have been using catfood as bait as mentioned above the only thing with our little wager is the one with the least amount of crayfish at the end of the season has to eat a tin of the bait.  good luck with your crayfish hauling. Rich mine had 37 in oh and by the way the lads call me black dog thats cos if they have a black dog i have one blacker lol Quote Link to post

watchinufish 0
There are few colonies of Signals, mainly in the stillwaters, but beacuse there are still some of our naturals, in the Wansbeck I think, the EA lot won't grant a licence to anyone to trap them up here. I've already asked! Quote Link to post
